Seat Belts Install for Slow Stocker
I'm working on a slow stocker / bracket-race car & would like to use 3", 5-point type seat belts. Something better than the factory belts.
My question is where to attach the shoulder belts when the car doesn't have a roll bar & is using factory seats. Anyone have any examples of this type install? Thanks. |
Re: Seat Belts Install for Slow Stocker
We had a fabricator that bolted a bar behind the seat of his pickup where it would be on the rollbar and put the shoulder belts on it.

Can not offer any mounting suggestions but I wanted to pass along belt certification info.
You can use a 5 point out dated belt in N and slower classes. Not all Track tech inspectors are aware of this. This came directly from our NHRA Tech Director. Steve Teeter STK/SS 620 |

Thanks. Good to know. |
Re: Seat Belts Install for Slow Stocker
They make an extra long shoulder belt for floor mount behind the seat. RJS sells them.

I think they are not legal for NHRA. |

Irrelevant anyway , unless you have a 6 pt. bar. What's the problem with stock OEM belts, anyway? This is a dime rocket, yes? If you're worried about being chased, why not put in a 6 pt. bar and racing belts..then, of course you'll need racing seats, because stock seats are not safe either. Probably ought to leave the air bags in, too. Also you'll want a big full face helmet where you can't see as much, being chased.. Go for it..all the way.. Kinda defeats the dime rocket idea though ;-) |

It's in the rule book. |

Probably nothing wrong with OEM belts. I was just thinking someone must have installed aftermarket belts in a slow car without a roll bar & just wanted to see how they did it. This is definitly racing for cheap. I'm not looking to spend any more money than I have to. |

Re: Seat Belts Install for Slow Stocker
I used to have a set of Y shoulder RCI belts that were mounted to the floor behind me when I was younger. A seasoned racer spelled out to me why it was a bad idea. With my low back bucket seats, if the belts did come into play they would drive me down in the seat and likely compress my spine. Without a cage, if they were tight enough to keep me upright and the car ended up shiny side down, they would keep me from rolling to the side while the roof came down and.... compress my spine. He explained that is why the rule book only allows the shoulder belt to be mounted a short distance (4 or 5 inches I believe) below the drivers shoulders. I run a 3 inch, very expired belt mounted in the factory location, just in case I do end up inverted so I don't have to worry about trying to push a tiny OEM button while hanging.

The 67 did come with a OEM shoulder harness option so the fastener could be under your headliner, I use the OEM locations on my comet with expired belts, I would highly recommend a shoulder harness..
