Live from Epping,NH - NHRA Lucas Oil Series

Hi gang- first things first - normally at this time of year we'd be talking about who is leading division points but this year things are not normal as we have only completed two events and its already the end of August .

Next thing is here at Epping things have changed already -test and tune has been cancelled because of rain ( there I go with that four letter word already ) and tomorrow we will have two Q passes weather permitting and Saturday morning we will go right into round one first thing.

And it wouldn't be a trip to New England without some drama - while pulling in this morning our Division Director pointed out I was dripping water from my coach bottom .So after parking I realize there is no water in my tanks because of a hose that popped off - seems I left a trail of water from PA to NH ....

More later.....

At 10pm tonight it was still raining on and off. Radar showed more rain tonight, hopefully stopping by 1 or 2am. The pits where I parked is standing water and mud. Hoping the Sun comes out tomorrow and dries it out. Looks like a good turn with very little available parking.

Duane,
Have fun up there this weekend. I raced New England Dragway a lot while stationed in Brunswick, Me. with the Navy in the 80's and 90's.

I have won a total of 2 races in all my years of trying. the first was at Jax Raceways in Jacksonville, Fl. in April of 1982 and the second was at New England Dragway in May of 1982. Yes it was that long ago. Never won anything, anywhere since but not for a lack of trying, LOL!

Good Luck.

Ray

So we have been on hold since eight this morning for track issues -i.e. had to scrape the track because of too much water under the rubber.Latest is that we'll start off with Stock at 1pm giving everyone two Q runs today and elims tomorrow morning first thing.

Good morning-In less that an hour we'll be starting off with the juniors followed by Stock .Today will be another hot and humid deal and dialing this am could be tricky.

Last evening we ran until almost nine ensuring everyone got their two shots at the track thanks to the hard work of the D1 crew.

Today we will race until completion as tomorrow will be a washout for sure .

Most racers will surely pack up and leave as soon as they lose (or win ) as everyone knows the huge storm is coming up the East Coast .Even the National Guard has been called out to help with the flooding that is expected Sunday and Monday .

Later

We're down the road but I got a call - a few finals ( including Stock and s/s )left to do but it got dewy and they will be run at a later date -probably Maple Grove .Stock- Sickles and Bednaz - S/S -Gay and L. Morehead .

So after being hot and sticky for a few days its great to be on the way home - even with a hurricane coming .

The live timing seems to have stopped for stk and ss at rd 5. But the live timing has a list of winners which makes it appear that they finished ?????? Someone who is there will chime in here and give us the facts. What Jack said sounds correct until you look at the list of winners ,,,

Jack has it correct on S/SS finals.

Just got off the phone with Greg Gay. His final with Lincoln Morehead was called off due to moisture on the track and will be run on Thursday of the Keystones. Morehead's final is all the more impressive as he showed up after Friday qualifying and was put at the bottom of the ladder. Congrats to Eddie Chin for his semi-final showing in SS.

Stock final to be run at either VMP or Cecil. Congrats to Tim and Todd for making the finals.

Why would they put finals in two different locations?

Bob - It depended on when the next time would be that the two finalists would be at the same race.

Congratulations to the finalist, the racing conditions were nothing short of brutal, very warm and humidity like I’ve never seen. A tip of the hat to the D1 staff and New England Dragway track crew, they worked their butts off scraping nearly the entire track on Friday and getting us all two shots and nearly finishing the event so everybody could get out of there. I wouldn’t be able to stand out there all day long working the starting line in those conditions. It was a fun fast paced weekend, the two day format worked out well with the low turnout.

One thing that impressed me was the amount of spectators that were there. There was a more than normal amount of Friday, but Saturday was very full. There were families walking around the pits, the stands were full, and the spectator parking lot seemed to me at full capacity. They had a 50/50 with half the proceeds going the a police k9 foundation which went off with over 2000.00 to the winner.
It would be nice to see this at other tracks for divisionals.

Epping is a great place to race and in my humble opinion always has been.

Jack Doyle, and former Top Fuel pilot Don Roberts was his number 2. I talked to Jack at the LODRS race. He's still hanging in there.

I LOVED the 2-day format! If the weather had held, it would have been a really sensational racing day! I had always previously skipped the Sunday of the divisional, but last year with COVID, wanted to get to as many races as possible, so attended the Sundays of the June Divisional and the JEG'S Sportsnationals in August, and thoroughly enjoyed all the racing action. I specifically made sure I was staying for Sunday of this year, but ultimately, I really like the idea of 2-day divisionals if they could conceivably be done (other car counts at other venues may not work, understandably, but I liked all the Eliminations being done and completed the same day).

Was wonderful to see a great crowd taking in NHRA Division One Sportsman action. I can only imagine the racers enjoyed racing in front of a crowd? As stated in my last post, I really liked the idea of finishing all Sportsman eliminations on Saturday. Made for a VERY exciting day in my opinion!

Yup, that's it! Knew it was Smiley something. Raced there a lot 82 -86, and 90-93 during my Navy years stationed in Brunswick, Maine.
