You will find a 1.98 has the best gear split of all low geared PG ratios.

Well it looks like I can change my 1.76 to 1.96 without too much worry then.

Bob the rear gear ratio also plays a huge factor into this. Should the question not be, what is your overall first gear ratio?

Re: Power glide 1st gear

I’d like to change mine to a 1.96 gear from what I’ve read they don’t take much power.
My 396 makes around 600 flywheel hp presently but doesn’t 60’ we’ll 1.45/1.47’s .
I’ve had an Ultimate converter on the shelf for a while.
Once I run that I can look at my next change.
Seems to be a few cars here with quite a bit more power than I getting it done with a 1.96 1st.

Re: Power glide 1st gear

Bob,
When you go from a 1.76 to a 1.96 you may need a converter change to get the most out of it. Because of the gear ratio the converter will usually act a few hundred RPM tighter or it might be sluggish pulling off the 1-2 shift. It just depends on what you have and if the converter/engine likes the gear.
I always test one at a time. Watch your flash off the line and at the gear change. there could be a change.
Good luck.

Thank you Adger.
The overall is 4.57x 1.76=8.043 presently

Re: Power glide 1st gear

The lower the ratio, the smaller the input sun gear and the weaker the gear set in general The 1.96 that's popular currently is based on the 1.76 carrier seems to live quite well. Many of the other low ratio gear sets are based on the 1.82 carrier and they can be pretty fragile. I've stopped building anything lower than the 1.96.

How about the 2.08 gear sets?I have one in my Chevelle wit 5.38's for an overall first gear ratio of 11.19 to 1, and my Chevelle wagon has a set of 5.57's for an overall gear ratio of 11.585. Both cars leave well and you go for a long ride in high gear after the up shift.

Re: Power glide 1st gear

I always ran a 2.08 with a 5.13 in my 67 Camaro small block stocker. Never had any trouble with the trans though the motor never made much more than 400 hp.
