Air Induction

The 80 Z/28 came with air induction air cleaner, I am not running one on my 80 I/S Z/28 now but, was able to find one with the hood ring. Any opinions on what kind of gains I might get with running one

Re: Air Induction

What MPH will you be running? I don't think you will see much HP increase from Ram Air. Where most of your HP increase will come from is temperature difference from outside air and under hood air.

Right now 115 MPH, looking for more.

Our Mopar A bodies are NO faster with the Ram Air Hoods (Either years).
But I like how they look!
My 69 Hemi Roadrunner ran the same with the Hood intakes Duct Taped up!

Re: Air Induction

First lets start with not all setups work the same. If we look at the best case (note these results are from a computer simulation).

60 Foot ET = 1.5314
330 Foot ET = 4.5364
1/8 Mile ET = 7.1430
1/8 Mile MPH = 93.9069
1000 Foot ET = 9.4068
1/4 Mile ET = 11.3221
1/4 Mile MPH = 118.0352

With Ram Air
60 Foot ET = 1.5313
330 Foot ET = 4.5335
1/8 Mile ET = 7.1353
1/8 Mile MPH = 94.1292
1000 Foot ET = 9.3926
1/4 Mile ET = 11.3013
1/4 Mile MPH = 118.4606

If i'm reading this correctly, If you claim the car a 80 Z/28 and don't have a hood with the cowl, It's not a Z/28, and only Z/28 had the 350, just my 2cents.

I was taking it as he has the cowl hood but does not have the correct setup to seal the air clearer to the cowl.

The car is a 1980 Z/28, with the cowl hood, just not using the cowl air cleaner.

Re: Air Induction

Stan ,

I went ahead and bought a 1980 OEM air cleaner set up, will be going to Topeka on the 19th for TnT. I will do a back to back and see what happens. Will post results.
Thanks

Re: Air Induction

Be interesting to see if it does much, if anything. My buddys wife had a 80 ZZ28, and those 2 rectangular opening are quite small, and a fair distance away from the windshield, compared to say, a 69 Camaro Cowl Induction hood. And does anybody know if the 69 Cowl hood really does anything, besides give more space above the carb?

I have run my Super Stock 69 Camaro with cowl scoop open and closed.
No difference!

Re: Air Induction

I have tried it in a 82 z/28 hood with the flaps,,, no gain,,, I would't waste your money, just saying

I found one pretty cheap, I will restore it and try it, if it doesn't work I will sell it, they are hard to find.

Re: Air Induction

NOT a hood scoop, but cold air cleaner housing to fender tubes to the front on a Fox Body car. Fresh air instead of hot air under the hood. It was worthy in this part of the country in August.:D

Don, my 85 5.0 carbed Mustang also had the ducting from behind the bumper to the inner fenders, but I tried back to back testing with the factory dual snorkle air cleaner with the plastic flex tubes connecting the fender ducts to the air cleaner snorkles, with and without a K&N filter inside, and basically it ran the same with or without the air cleaner housing on, or just letting the ducts blow the air all around the engine compartment. Maybe that huge aluminum air cleaner assembly trapped enough engine heat between the intake manifold and carb, to offset any benefit of potentially cooler air going into that "oven".

Well Rory mine runs just a little harder than your stuff in worse air in D-5 compared to the west or east coast. 3500-4500` air conditions here in July & August. Just have to keep trying stuff. I know a SS car that put his cold air on and picked the car up. What you should see is in the 330 times........
:D

I did some testing today at Heartland Park Topeka, not a good day to test but did get my clutch dialed in. A steady head wind 19MPH gusting to 26. fastest run 11.746 @ 112.54 made 6 runs, slowest 11.82 @110.85, last run of the day with the air induction air cleaner 11.772 @ 111.98 with 22 MPH head wind, and there was no starting line prep, bunch of street cars tracking water to the line all day. May have to try the cowl induction again Thursday in Noble Ok.
