Live from “ Lucas Oil Nationals “ BIR

I will start the thread, but anyone please jump in. Stacking started this morning and I think there are approximately 75 rigs in line. We are parked on the road course as usual and parking should begin in the morning. Class wIll be run on Thursday for both Stock and S/S. With only 55 cars in each class, I sure the combo field will busy. The first National event at BIR was run in 1982, but we missed a year because of Covid. More to follow. Dyno.

Is this the race where the spectators have a special place and all of the fun?

Good luck to all

Darcy, good to see you back in the US and on tour. You and Cotten usually vie for the long distance award and with current diesel prices not many want in that competition.

I just got here and was told just about everyone is here.Only about 30-40 more rigs to go.
My first observation is how bare the pits look.I can't believe they don't raise the quotas in classes like Stock Eliminator. They are turning away such easy money. But it is supposed to rain,so maybe it's good there are only 55 cars.

It's pretty amazing, isn't it?

The issue can't be the pit space because I keep reading these reports of bare pit areas. And, I am pretty sure the Brainerd Stock quota was 80 (75 at least) only a few years ago and every other quota was similarly higher. I guess all the race tracks are getting smaller.

The issue can't be the schedule or track curfew because why wasn't schedule a problem 15 years ago when there were easily 100+ Stockers and 70+ SSers at many of these races?
Or why wasn't schedule a problem 3 years ago when the quotas were 20 cars higher at many of these races? I guess the days are getting shorter.

Hmm...guess it'll remain a mystery why the sportsman quotas continue to dwindle...

Parking went well today, about 2 hours to get in. If you arrived after 1:00, it was a straight drive in. As mentioned above there is a lot of parking spaces open. The quota’s could have been larger. Supposed to rain around midnight, then decent weather until late afternoon tomorrow. Two time runs, then class tomorrow.

A quota at this race makes no sense to me considering the class eliminations, location and two weeks until Indy.
I guess the N.H.R.A. doesn't need the revenue.

Stock, S/C, S/S and SG all got 2 runs in. Stock got through 1st round of Class and they were 1/2 way through S/S and it rained real hard for 10 minutes. Starting to clear up now, but a lot of water everywhere.

After some clearing and track prep by NHRA, back at it and finished S/S and called Stock Class back to the lanes. Finished 2nd round of Stock and this time it REALLY rained and they called it a day. Great job by the track crew the entire day!

We were supposed to run first round after the second Pro session. It was looking like it was going to happen, as there aren't 16 Funny Cars or 16 Top Fuel cars.Things were going smoothly and after dodging several rain cells, one popped up late in the day and they announced that first round will now be tomorrow.Right now, weather for tomorrow looks good.I left the track and don't know if they tried to dry the track to finish the Pros.No lights,so time may run out on that idea. Those Safety Safari guys worked hard today.

After some hectic track drying, the nitro classes are now running. Hoping for better weather tomorrow. Lots of race fuel wasted with cars warming up before the rain.

Some serious dialing and driving to the third number (.000) in the first round of Stock.
WOW!

Wow, Curtis went 1.40 under on his bye, sure glad I’m not building a 360 Drag Pak car. He obviously enjoys running the car hard, gotta give him that at least.

I think he has a 5.7 and it is a stickshift car. The auto has been beat down several times and still runs good so I think he will end up with a better car that is still a class win contender anywhere.

jmcarter 08-20-2022 03:51 PM

Re: Live from “ Lucas Oil Nationals “ BIR

Assumed Curtis was still running the 360, based on Nitro Joe’s stats at least.

Thank you, my math puts it at FS/E, F or G but I could be wrong. It is a 5.7 Stick car. It has always been a 5.7 or 6.1. Never a 360. It was fun and I earned my first Wally. I am super excited to see what the future holds.

In our day, yes. Today his classes might get picketed for his wonton destruction of the environment. Not going political, just making the point that today’s youth are largely indifferent to the car culture. My soon to be 14 YO grandson is a baseball enthusiast, great kid with a unbelievable work ethic. When I asked him about getting his driver’s permit he was largely ho-hum about it. His free time is absorbed by baseball, PlayStation and an electronics fixation that requires a set daily time limit. I haven’t given up, have him moving vehicles around but don’t see the trend reversing.
