Tracking Ian
Ya know, I really don't feel like going to Dinwiddie and either sitting in the rain or not being able to finish the event. Are there any ideas floating around regarding possibly postponing this to another date?
I really like this track and I want to support the track and the Division but I'm not going to drive down there for nothing. |

Re: Tracking Ian
D1 said they were going to make a call yesterday on the event and plans but, decided to hold off till today at noon to see if the storm will move or slow down enough to attempt to race. Friday had actually started to look good but, now has gone back to 50%.
I know it falls on where to put the event now if it gets cancelled, the amount of rain projected (1-2 inches) will make it tough and probably force a rebuild of the track surface. VMP schedule is pretty packed the rest of the year with big $$ bracket races & PDRA events, it would suck to cancel VMP D1 race because we're already losing the NE next year and with new sanctioning bodies coming up, we need to keep those tracks happy in D1 but, don't think many will attend with fuel & weather forecasts looking the way they are. One other option could be to cancel all together, you know this was a bonus race for us in D1 this year, we normally only get 7 per year but, got spoiled with 8 this year. Yes, it sucks for those who missed a race because of planning to go to other but, mother nature can be a real b----- at this time of the year. Atco also has a big .90 & Stock/SS event next weekend with points championships on the line for both series which would put Dave & I in a tough spot to reschedule as Atco is packed the rest of the year. My thought would be to see if Maple Grove wants to turn the Dutch into a D1 Regional Race or maybe a Double like at Numidia...Open Thursday / Friday and D1 Race Sat & Sun but, I'm sure Dave has all his papers and phone at his hand calling and weighing out all the options at hand. Had to throw one more obstacle at Dave before he sails off into Retirement.....lol |
Re: Tracking Ian
Here is your answer Billy ,
This is not the happy post you were all looking for. It’s also not the way we wanted our Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series season to end. But, with the outlook of Hurricane Ian making it’s way north, there is no real positive scenario in completing the event in the fashion you all expect and deserve. With no dates available at Virginia Motorsports Park, we (the track and division office) have made the tough decision to cancel the event with no reschedule. We hope you all understand that this was not an easy decision, but we feel it’s the best decision we could make to allow everyone to stay safe during the storm. Thank you for your patience and understanding. |
Re: Tracking Ian
Why not make the Dutch Classic. A divisional.
Not an open race. I understand the office doesn’t want to do a double race. Why not. ? |
Re: Tracking Ian
Vmp is cancelled with no rescheduled date.

Billy,
The latest tracking doesn't look good for us in Charleston SC. |
Re: Tracking Ian
I am pretty sure Dave probably weighed every option out to reschedule the event or move it to another location. Every track is packed with things the rest of the year.

Re: Tracking Ian
Ya know, I'm not privy to the goings-on between the DD and the track owner when it comes to putting on a Div. Event and it's none of my business. BUT, I can't imagine the new owners of M.G. not wanting to jump at the chance to show off their improvements by having another event. And connecting it to "The Dutch" would almost guarantee a HUGE car count. The Division Office being "right around the corner" from M.G. can't be a bad thing either!

Also, I do believe Dave did everything he could to reschedule this event....why they waited an additional 24 hours to cancel cause I'm sure he was waiting on tracks to call him back, I'll be honest I was in talks with a track owner to move my .90 finale if Atco became the place to go next weekend. Like I said D1 is getting a rash of s--- over on FB right now about their decision but, I think if you were in the office (i wasn't) the past two days with Dave and his team, I don't think he just sat back and didn't try everything in his power to find an alternative and after Oct 31st, theirs a position open for someone to make those calls now. |
Re: Tracking Ian
Wow, I thought this was a thread about Hurricane Ian. People will be dying in my state very shortly and you guys have turned a thoughtful thread into a "Does anybody know how this will affect the race in Virginia NEXT YEAR"!! Shame on you. I thought we were better than that. Start another thread if that is all you want to think about. I can tell you this will affect the race in Orlando and Bradenton for sure. How do you think Peter Noriega is doing in Miami right about now? Jim Bailey and 100s other racers and their families? 6 very destructive tornadoes spawned by this storm so far. 155 MPH winds will be hitting us soon. This is a cat 5 storm guys and it won't be fun here for a long time. How about saying a prayer for your fellow racers. Wind and rain is picking up here and I have more important things to worry about than some of you missing a race or two. I am directly in the path. The song keeps running through my head "For those about to die, we salute you". Jim

Re: Tracking Ian
As stated above, we should be thinking and praying for ALL the people in the path of Ian. This storm will effect thousands and thousands of people. I have family traveling in the area north of Florida right now. They are safe, for now, but hope they retreat to the west soon. I also have 2 friends (a young couple) on their delayed honeymoon at Disney World. I pray that they, along with everyone else, get out safely or bunker down somewhere and make it through this storm.
MY PRAYER IS FOR ALL TO BE SAFE AND LIVE THROUGH THIS. Update on my family traveling. They are in Johnson City, Tennessee. That is NW of Charlotte North Carolina which is in the projected path of Ian. |
Re: Tracking Ian
 PDRA has announced the cancellation of their event at Galot this weekend due to the hurricane. NEOPMA is still on for their co-headling event at MIR, but they are going to be hit by the same weather and I'd expect them to cancel as well.
Everyone stay safe. |
Re: Tracking Ian
I am here in the Tampa Bay Area. Yesterday we were right in the Bulls Eye for land fall. I did my hurricane prep. Boarded up windows gathered water and food got gas for cars trucks and generators. Plans were made to evacuate to higher ground with our vehicles and toter this morning before the storm hit.
When I woke up this morning the path of the storm had shifted to the south enough to spare us. We dodged a huge bullet. Yesterday I had resigned myself that I probably would not have anything left to come home too. Between the crushing wind and storm surge of a cat 4 hurricane I would have lost everything. We are counting our blessings right now. We are still getting tropical storm force winds here and there is damage and power outages. There are lots of racers here in the SW Florida area and many will be affected. Keep them in your thoughts. |
Re: Tracking Ian
Jim,
My apologies, it was definitely not the intent of my posts to defer the serious situation at hand. I have seen and spoken to a few people who have said their whole neighborhood is gone and some who just had rain and wind....very crazy on how these storms work. Prayers to all the racing community who calls Florida their home or have "Snowbird" homes down in those areas affected. It was just getting frustrating trying to make people understand that it's just not that easy to move an event. A lot of behind the door talk that happens that us as racers will never see or hear about and it, we did, our heads might explode. So my apologies and I hope you and your family are safe. |
Re: Tracking Ian
I just talked to the friends of mine down there and said it is better now. He said some damage and still some winds but the worst appears to be over. They are at Disney World and that area is on the edge of the path and not hit as hard as other areas. Very good news for me. I told them "see you when you get back."
With that being said, I have seen the overwhelming devastation in some parts of Florida. I am grateful that my friends are O.K. but that doesn't lessen the impact on this region. It will take months and tons of help to allow this area to recover. My family that is traveling from here that are in Tennessee will get the storm sometime late Saturday. My prayers are for them to be safe. Update - - Just talked with the family and they are heading west early Saturday morning. Prayers for the people in Florida and the surrounding areas in the path of Hurricane Ian. |
