Scam Alert be careful
This is the second time I have posted a WTB add on this site, and the second time that some scammer reads this and says they have what you need, when asked for pics of the item they are off a manufacturer website, not an actual taken pic from the seller, be careful out there! Too many people trying to screw everyone.

Re: Scam Alert be careful
Tim, I posted a WTB ad in September, and they are still contacting me
today. I told them all to send me a picture with the item, themselves, and todays newspaper in the pic. They all said they live too far from the store to get a newspaper( I'm guessing about 5,000 miles). The first one came back about 2 months later, like the first instance didn't happen. The other one to be careful of is when they have something for sale, and their join date is 12/22 for example. Thanks, J.R. |
Re: Scam Alert be careful
Glad I’m not the only one! Last time I asked the guy to send me the package shipping label and pics of it being boxed up, I got the most cut and pasted pic of some generic package it wasn’t even funny. Just goes to show that not even this site is safe anymore

Re: Scam Alert be careful
I am having the same thing happen to me.
As soon as I put my phone number in the ad I started getting texts. |
Re: Scam Alert be careful
Same story for me. Within a few mins of posting a "looking for" ad one was posted. That was the first red flag. Second flag was a pics from the GM web site of the part. Third was when I ask for a picture of back side, he could not provide that.

Re: Scam Alert be careful
Same here. Knew it was a problem when I asked for a pic, then he wanted Pay Pal friends and family. Reported the account to
Ken and action was taken right away. |

Same!

Re: Scam Alert be careful
I manage CR and my motorcycle related forums the same way. Only deal with those that I recognize their names or have solid history of posts. On occasion I’ve had dealings with newbies but only after a long conversation over the phone to gauge their sincerity. Last week I bought a motorcycle and each of us drove 400 miles to exchange cash for the bike and no deposit was offered or requested. Guy had like 3000 posts on a forum plus we had a long conversation to make sure no ghosting or scamming was involved. Also, I never put my phone number on ads, not even with alpha numbers, the scum can run scripts to defeat that. Love dealing with solid folks and HATE scammers/thieves.

Re: Scam Alert be careful
I recently got scammed on here. Somebody listed some parts for sale, and I told them I'd take them and listed my phone number, that was probably my mistake. Somebody contacted me with a different e-mail address than the name in the ad, but sometimes folks use a relative, or somebody elses PayPal address, so I sent the money. They had asked all the right questions, so I thought it was legit. I didn't receive the parts, and I saw where another member had, so I asked for my money back, and got ghosted. I contacted PayPal and I was surprised they couldn't do anything for me because they hadn't sent the money yet supposedly. So now I am dealing with my credit card company. Long story but be on the lookout! |

Re: Scam Alert be careful
On the Olds site I inquired WTB a 7A head. 1 guy had a set. I asked for pics and he sent 4 pics. Seemed legit then he became very anxious and waited by the phone, ready to ship without knowing what state im in and the shipping cost. I passed. Then about a month later a different guy said he had a set. I had him send me pics and it was a head from a 4 cylinder 4 valve aluminum. I told him its not what Im looking for and a hard pass. He stated if I can get it to work he would reduce the price some.

Jeff, an adaptor style head gasket might do the job.

Re: Scam Alert be careful
Man, I feel a whole lot better after reading these posts. I thought this **** only happened to me. There is a Walmart just a mile from my home. I had stopped in there a few weeks ago on a Monday to buy some items. When I walked to my truck in the parking lot there were 2 twenty something year old females acting as though they were washing my windshield. They didn’t do a very good job. They demanded 25 bucks a piece and even though I kept telling myself that this might be a scam I handed them the cash. When I returned on Wednesday and Thursday they only charged me 20 bucks a piece …..

Re: Scam Alert be careful
I’ve posted WTB 2015 392 DP stuff and even all the scammers know it’s not available and don’t bother wasting their time.

Re: Scam Alert be careful
Another scam is happening when selling on FB marketplace. A "buyer" will say they are interested or want it and to give them your number so they can send you a code to verify you are real. They clone an account with your info via gmail. I never fell for it but have had the requests for them to send me a code happen.

Same happend to me...... sent me a crude pic of what I was looking for....They wanted Pay-Pal only thru Friends & Family...... NOPE
Thanks again to some long standing members here that I recognized & reached out to...... |
Re: Scam Alert be careful
On a serious note, I would only buy parts on CR from names that I recognize. If I don’t recognize the name I will give them a call to see where they live. Since I only deal with stock/superstock racers, I will mention some stock/superstock racers that live in their area. Their reaction to the names dictates whether I will purchase the parts from them. It’s not entirely foolproof BUT I have never had a problem purchasing parts on CR. An old, wise racer told me many years ago, Used race car parts are generally USED UP … If a deal sounds too good to be true , it usually is ….

Re: Scam Alert be careful
I have had the same problems posted a wanted ad with my number and email they keep trying to scam me!!! They wanted PayPal friends and family. Alabama phone number said they were in Maine.

Re: Scam Alert be careful
Another one to be aware of...I listed a part on here with clear description, part number and link to the original vendor, sold it,paid by Paypal friends and family.
Buyer realized he bought the wrong part from me,I did not offer a refund since I felt my listing was accurate-he put a claim in with Paypal-Paypal sided with me. He then went to the his bank and claimed "unauthorized purchase"! His bank withdrew all the funds from my Paypal account! According to Paypal it was out of their hands and could do nothing!! The buyer was not even obliged to send the parts back! After some coaxing the parts were sent back to me about a month later! |
