Looking to Spank some DPA Racing 302 COPO
So since Charlie has Daren Poole-Adams distracted trying to join the GPA client list I will slip this in here tonight.
We had some lively exchanges last year about his 302 COPO with a the same 350 NHRA Horsepower rating hanging with my Cobra-Jet Mustang. I disagreed. Life got in the way last year but the time has come to lay out a plan to get this done. NMRA/NMCA May 4-7 Madison Illinois Best out of 3 on Saturday. I have arranged it with Rollie at NMCA. Let's Rock! |
Re: Looking to Spank some DPA Racing 302 COPO
Anybody know where the cheapest place to buy lead is?
I guess I'll need new spark plugs too.... |
Re: Looking to Spank some DPA Racing 302 COPO
Old wheel weights at your local tire store. Then you might want to cook them down and skim off the steel. Then pour them up in a mold, my favorite is the old cast iron cornbread muffin pans. The pan that makes the part look like an ear of corn is way kool.

Re: Looking to Spank some DPA Racing 302 COPO
Sorry to tell you all this but now most wheel weights are now made of zinc. Some states have already outlawed the stuff. Hoard what you can. Happy new year. Tom

Re: Looking to Spank some DPA Racing 302 COPO
I call 100% BS on this one!!!
I know DPA fairly well and I have met Mr. Lawrence on a couple of occasions, both top notch gents. If ya gonna for real do it……do it an NHRA event, with tear down for both, if ya got it where it counts!!!! Believe me….this is not a NHRA promotion, but then nobody has any rights to the bitchin’ and complainin’ that is done incessantly on this here forum!!! With that, I leave it to these here 2 fellas and Mr. Yo Ken to continue this here “rumble in the jungle”. Out! |
Re: Looking to Spank some DPA Racing 302 COPO
S/SS could use more "call-outs" like this! I'm loving it!

Re: Looking to Spank some DPA Racing 302 COPO
This one has been coming for a long while. Robin talks way too much sh!t...
The NMCA is probably the best place to run something like this. They are always supportive and the race surface is usually top notch. I also don't see NHRA allowing us to run a "best of three" during prime time at a National. The NMCA has graciously agreed to this. On top of that, both of us have to consider our averages. I will have to add weight to get past Robin's whining. The class that we have agreed to is FS/G. I have no worries that Robin's junk will pass a tear-down. It just isn't worth the effort to prove what we already know. Neither one of us is geared towards building intentionally bogus cars. If and when the NHRA wants to see inside my 302, I will gladly tear it down. This should be a fun match race. What could be better than two high revving 302's running at the same weight heads-up? Classic Ford vs Chevrolet! |
Re: Looking to Spank some DPA Racing 302 COPO
Didn’t have the NMCA race on my calendar but it sure is now!

I would never call Daren a **** talker, everyone else has beat me to it. I know he has a deep love for my car. He was photographed getting intimate with the car while it was being prepped for paint. I will never look at that quarter panel the same way every again. I would love to be able to do this at an open. Between our schedules, like last year there were not al lot of dates or events that we could both commit. Hopefully Jim Bailey can insure that Daren's car is legal. You know all those LS engines look alike, we need to pump that deal to be sure Daren didn't slip that 427 in there by accident! What say you Daren, ..... pro tree? Robin |

The combination that I have run for the past 2 years was a 2012 325 HP 302 cubic in Ford Coyote Cobra-Jet. George went fast in Vegas and was rewarded with 11 horsepower bringing us up to 336 HP with the Stick Shift.
The same combo in an automatic was reviewed and was moved to 333 for the deeds of the guys running the automatics this year. With a little more lift on the cams and an Intake and Throttle Body change my engine fits in the 2014 CJ 350 HP class. I will need to change the hood, bumper covers, headlight and tail lights to make the car legal as a 2013 or 2014. Both years have 350 HP combinations. the 2013 allows the CNC Ported Boss style heads and a slightly larger exhaust valve than the 2014 350 HP combination. I can run either against Daren. I did some testing last week by swapping an Intake and Throttle body on the 325 HP engine. Let's just say it was very productive. Robin |

Lets talk about what makes this matchup fun. To start, Both cars are stated 302 cubic inches. Both will run with respective 350 NHRA Rated Combinations. Daren's is a 2023 with the LT1 DI head running with Port Injection My CJ can be either a 2013 or 2014 which is a 4 cam, 4 valve head Coyote engine. Daren is running a Metric 200 Trans and Radial Tires My car has a 5 speed G Force trans and I have bias tires Daren says he has run a best of a 9.91 ET at a "high" DA Don't know how heavy he was but I think that he ran that in FS/F My best ever with my car was a 10.11 with the 325 Combination. That was at the NMCA race in St Louis 2021. The DA was 1635' and with a 1.02 correction factor. I was 30 pounds over FS/H weight. Daren says his engine makes 600 ish Horsepower at the crankshaft.on the Holley DTS Dyno. I haven't verified that but I think that is accurate. I've played with my older 350 Combination and made the following numbers at the Crankshaft. 596 on First Engine I bought from Bo Butner on Holley Dyno back in 2017 615 on a Stuska with DEPAC at West Dyno near me 4 years ago 590 On current engine on Brian Wolfe's Superflow 901 2 years ago As we know dyno's are relative. It's the track that counts. Recent testing on the chassis dyno showed some promise with the intake and throttle body swap. We have bantered about how close these combinations are to each other on paper. This should be fun Here are my current Rear Wheel Horsepower Numbers The red line is my current 325 HP 2012 Setup with the stock intake and throttle body. The blue line is a few days later with the Intake and throttle body for the 350 combination. Enjoy Robin |

Re: Looking to Spank some DPA Racing 302 COPO
I don’t know who to cheer for but dislike the the brands on an equal basis. They are just two corporate carpetbaggers, I mean Sandbaggers. A new 632 rated at 267 Hp is just a touch light.

Unlike last year when we had to push this *** kicking to 2023 I am going to have time to dedicate to the cause. I did pull out of my southern trip as well as worked with Holley on my early retirement. So while you are working at DPA and taking boat trips with Mickey Mouse I will be on dyno and the track when they open sorting this deal out. I have picked up another set of cams, some Jesel solid pedestals , more G Force transmission ratios and a couple more rear gears to find the sweet spot. Just be sure you don't put one of those cheater 440 cubic inch short blocks under those valve covers. I will put up the cash to have you torn down in needed. Robin |

I studied the specs in the guide for a couple of years before settling on a "Soft" combination. They are out there, The new cars haven't been killed like every Camaro that people want to run. Only a few willing to run the 4 valve Ford, and even less that put a stick shift behind it. Call me crazy, oh wait. Call me a sandbagger. It's like the Blinder discussion that never dies, read the rules, understand the limits and build/race to the parameters that are in place. Have a great day! Robin |
Re: Looking to Spank some DPA Racing 302 COPO
Billy I think seat removal is ok on a 2019 Challenger if equipped with the seat delete package. The Neon I don’t know.
Robin your a brave man, because you are one chain link away from a disaster. Your engine has enough bicycle chain to stretch from my house to your house. Good luck to both we are looking forward to the show. Is it true that the looser will have the White House Press Secretary answer the questions on why they lost? |

It makes sense to toss new chains on these things annually just to be safe. Last I looked they were on back order. When Daren got off the boat he called and asked if i was going to make serious changes. I told him nah, maybe some new spark plugs....... Robin |

Re: Looking to Spank some DPA Racing 302 COPO
Wow almost a year since I was able to squeak by the 302 of DPA Racing. Heading down the St Louis in the morning to race Super Stock at the NMCA race. Wonder where that COPO is hiding........
Really GUMP was a great sport and gave me a scare for a moment. Driver had to stay focused. We sorted the car out and ran some 9.70's in Stock trim and a couple of high 9.50's 40 pounds lighter and with a clutchless trans in good air and Super Stock legal. We need to do more of these match races. Thanks all! Robin |
Re: Looking to Spank some DPA Racing 302 COPO
I tried to get a David and Goliath race with DPA racing. The 392 vs the big dump truck COPO engine, close to 700 cubic inches I think. It’s always fun Ford vs Chevy vs MoPar.
