Old Mopar photos

Time for the Mopar clan to enjoy their favorite old photos. Make sure you have plenty of time because there are hundreds of pictures on the site. Lots of the original old S/S Darts and Barracudas. Enjoy.

Thanks for posting these Travis,,,, This proves if more of us send our old photos into the right people or places, we can all benefit from shots we took "back in the day". I recognized about 30 of these shots as taken through my viewfinder back in the 70s and 80s. Although I'm mostly a Chevy guy, there was always some great Mopars at the races, so you've got to shoot them too. I want to thank all the contributors who've sent in some great shots for all of us to enjoy. ( Yes,, I shot a lot of Fords also!)

Does anyone know what ever happened to the Paul Rossi SS/FA Dodge Challenger?
I saw a picture of it on another site with another drivers name on it, but? Did it end up
being sold overseas?

The car went to a nordic country - I believe Sweden. The owner has a website and I believe he may have posted here and/or some other Mopar-related sites. If I find it, I'll post it. It was in England for a while also.

A lot of those pictures came from one particular Yahoo group. It would have been nice if the gentleman would have posted the proper credit to the photographers. The information was supplied when the pictures were posted to the group.

Re: Old Mopar photos

If anyone is interested, I always loved Paul Rossi's Challenger, but was never able to find a nice pic of it. I think either Super Stock & Drag Illustrated or Popular Hot Rodding had an article on it with some black and white pics. I bought and sold Drag Racing Memorabilia for a few years and still do some selling on Ebay from time to time. I was on a site a while ago, and was able to find a link to auto imagery that had the most awesome pic of this car. I have it saved on AOL favorites, but don't know if this link still works. But try it. www.nhra.com/2007/gallery/pow/photo22.html. If it doesn't work maybe there would be some way for me to try to email it. It's the most gorgeous pic, front 3/4 shot launching, in color with the wheels in the air, I mean an absolutely breathtaking pic, especially be vintage. Let me know if the link works, to cut and paste. Frank Hamer Jr. NHRA Stock 1045

Ed, It doesn't seem to be the same car. I believe his cars all had his name or "Billy the Kid" on them.
Here is a photo I found of his 'Demon:

Thanks Myron,

I feel fairly certain that the photo in one of the posts is Booth's old 69 Bee. It would be a serious coincidence if there were another green one like that around! If it is the real deal I would restore it back to the way it was raced right down to the very last decal and then head for Barrett-Jackson!

Speaking of Rossi's Challenger. I remember one year they put him right next to our B/SA car at Indy. As soon as he found out we were pitted next to him he packed up and moved. Tex and I took showers that morning so it could not have been BO.
I wonder why the abrubt move. LOL LOL

Re: Old Mopar photos

I have a question about the purple Cuda of Stewart Pomeroy near the end of the page. Can anyone verify the history and/or the future of that car from the time that picture must have been taken.

I have been told that was an original Hurst/Sox and Martin car, later owned by Pomeroy, then sold to someone in the Ocala, Fl. area.

The first drag race I attended was a bracket race at Gainesville in early 1980, and there was a man named Tom Shively running a Hemi Cuda there at the bracket race, and I was told this was the car.

I know the car that Shively had was sold to someone else in the area then sold to another person in south Fla. and I am told the car was destroyed when the throttle hung open on the car inside of a garage.

Can anyone verify this?

Bob,

Worse yet, many of these pictures came from people's personal collections that they've posted on the web for others to enjoy. I can tell you first hand that the ALL of the photos of the Motown / Mopar Missile, including the yellow car (small block duster), wire car, pictures of Don Carlton, pictures of my uncle racing, the Accel poster autographed by Joe Pappas and my uncle (I have a full-size framed poster hanging on my wall right next to me), and all the pictures of Nelson Des Champs came from the private collections of the above mentioned people, and Stewart Pomeroy, through the efforts of Stewart Pomeroy (heck, there's even a recent picture of Stewart Pomeroy, John Wehrly, Tom Coddington, and my uncle!)

Anyway, you can see a history of the Missile program here, which includes all of these pictures, that Mr. Pomeroy put together through many hours of hard work:

http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/...eroTests.shtml

I don't know if any of these guys will care or not, but they still should have been credited, or linked to, not posted on this person's website as their own. Interestingly enough, the owner of the site, Bob, also wrote a computer program called "Picture Poacher" to "easily extract images from various webpages and optionally save a copy locally for your own archives. The program came about as a result of my obsessive web picture collecting." Go figure.

I agree Earle. I was just saying that to somebody the other day as I was working on my nameless car. There was just something unique about all the cars having names. Since you like the Missile so much, here's one from my personal collection (thanks to Stewart Pomeroy for helping stitch the scan together):

It is the old Shively car.It was also owned by Glenn Warfel, and if I'm right,Tom bought it from Glen. It's a old Sox& Martin A/MP car... IIRC.Tom sold the car to the Welch Brothers and from what I heard,is being restored back to the Sox & Martin timeframe.I don't know about it being involved in an garage accident. I do know it got ladder bars and was re-painted I think in 1981 or 82,

Joe Pinkston 12-31-2007 08:32 PM

Re: Old Mopar photos

Chris;

From what I have been told the car was purchased from Pomeroy by Caroll Fulford who lives in Ocala, and later Fulford sold it to Shively. Your version may be right though.

Thanks Jason for making the effort to give us some information on these old cars.

Re: Old Mopar photos

I have a couple of pics of a purple cuda who was at Bowling Green (late 70's or early 80"s), and it was a SS/GA car #5547. The window on the passenger side says "Mary Ann".

I took the pic because of the wild paint job.

Chris DeGidio 12-31-2007 10:46 PM

Re: Old Mopar photos

Joe,your version may be correct too.You know after 20-30 years the story changes and the memory bank can get foggy.

When we first started racing at Gainesville in 1975,Shively was running that 'Cuda with a 440.

That car looks an awful lot like Mevin Yowell's car. That was his paint style. It looks like the name has been taken off the door above the western scene. Maybe? Jim

OK, I just heard back from Stewart. This is what he had to say:

"yep, it was the S&M A/MP car --- after Pomeroy it went to Warfel and after that I do not know -- it was wrecked about 15 years ago, but I believe it is being "restored" now"

Hope that helps...

After a little checking, there is a Melvin Yow and a Bobby Yowell. Not saying that it can't be one of theirs, but their isn't any hint that it is either.

Yow:

Also had a dark blue '72 Challenger which is at the end of the Yowell album in the last link below.

Don't thank me! I only provided one of the pictures, and a link to the Hamtramck Registery. You can thank Joe Pappas, Stewart Pomerory (for scanning so many of the pictures), and my uncle (the next time you see him at the races). And yes, he does still look good, though he looks a LOT better now than a couple of years ago when he was walking around with that stupid staph infection...

You're welcome Joe, and I will let Stewart know you thanked him as well (though he's probably reading this post, so he probably already knows...)

Since we're kind of on this subject, I'll post one more...it's one of the saddest pictures you'll ever see. Here's the '72 Motown Missile in it's current state:

Looks like a Bobby Yowell ride/s that I remember, from the early '70's
They were big into the mural paint schemes. I remember at the '72 U.S. nats. they had a scene with old wooden ships on the trunk lid, and it said, Wooden ships, on the water.....Very free. Or something to that effect. I have a picture someplace......

Good morning All and a Great New Year to each of you. As Jason said, I have a good collection of old Mopar photos, most of them of the Mopar Missile. The photos were supplied by Dick Oldfield, Joe Pappas, Dave Koffel, John Wehrly, Dave Christie, and others. I am trying to save and share these historical photos. If you have any old photos, I would be honored to scan them to disc for you. There is absolutely NO CHARGE - I EVEN PAY THE RETURN POSTAGE. I do not use the photos for any commerical gain at all. And if you are looking for any Missile photos, please feel free to contact me via my profile email.

I hope a lot of you all are planning to attend the Hemi Reunion, in August, and we get a chance to meet and try to relive the old days, thru our shared memories.

Stewart Pomeroy
