Super Stock GT Classes

I saw a photo of a '64 Chevelle running 396/375 in GT/FA I believe. The GT concept has always eluded me. Can some clarify this for me?

You can run GT if you have an engine combination that is different from the ones that is original for the car you are running. You can’t claim GT if the engine is legal for super stock in your car body.
So if you have a 64 Chevelle and have an engine out of a 70 Chevrolet and that would be legal in a GT class

A Racer is allowed to run any Engine combination in a new or older body style, The Body remains the same but the updated engine HP is the same as if the engine came into a combination from the factory

Okay. So, disregarding if it would be competitive or not, I could use a 396/375 in a '78 Malibu Wagon?

Yes that would be a possibility. You would have to check to see if a wagon is legal in GT though. I cant rember if a wagon can run GT.
I also think the 396/375 is a stick only combo and you have to run the correct transmission for the engine combo.

Thanks for the clarification, guys. I was under the impression that GT was only for later model cars. Say '82 or later Camaros.and cars like that. It never occurred to me earlier models would figure in also.

Originally it was that way. 1980 and newer only. Several years ago that was changed to any year.

I think originally the reason for the GT classes was an attempt to get guys to build the new anemic cars coming out of Detroit into race cars. The 60's cars were so much better and no one wanted to built these smog motors. Detroit wanted their new cars going down the track. So they let them put the old engines in the new cars. Boy, how things have changed.

If you take a '82 Camaro and stick a '69 Camaro motor in it...GT

Wasn't it an outgrowth of the rules approving FWD-RWD conversions, for the same reasons you mentioned?

That also. But I don't remember many of them being built for the first few years. I could be wrong but all I remember was a ton of F-bodies showing up with the 993/624/041 and 882 400 cu in combos. My old car (Huntzberrys current multi colored one) was Kronbitters first one built. At that time it was white.. Pat built it for himself. Earl Roes current blue car was the second one.
