water pump drive vs electric pump
I need a new water pump drive, already got a brand new shorty aluminum pump and went to order the moroso kit..$177.00US???? WTH?? Used to be $79.00 last I looked, now close to $300Can for an electric motor and cogged belt?? Really??
I looked at SBF electric water pumps and they are $150.00 for the cheap and $600 for mezier or whoever. This thing only has 200hp or so, so the stock pump with kit will work, but what would people recommend? Is the no name electric water pump at Jegs or Summit any good? Or is there another drive kit available? I even tried to get the pulleys and belt seperately and can't. {{{{{{{Biggest question is, electric water pump or stock pump with electric drive?}}}}}}}} |
Re: water pump drive vs electric pump
All you need is the drive motor which is a blower motor and it’s available at any decent auto parts store. You just need the part number which I no longer have.

Re: water pump drive vs electric pump
Jim, I have a couple of Mr. Gasket/Moroso electric water pump drive kits in the garage, PM me.

I would go electric pump, less to go wrong, no belt. And cleaner install. |

Re: water pump drive vs electric pump
The belt drive on a stock pump will get you around 5-10 GPM. Even the cheap electric pump will flow more like 20-35 GPM. But at 200hp the belt drive will likely work fine. The higher flowing pump would help you cool down between rounds faster.

Re: water pump drive vs electric pump
Easy for me to spend your money but I would go with the Meziere pump.

budget for two electric pumps ....gotta have a spare

Re: water pump drive vs electric pump
If you have one of the 12v motor belt driven pump set ups and want a better motor that will turn a couple hundred rpm more my company sells these that we use in our centrifuges. They are way better than the smaller 12v motors used in the kit. We do have those also but they would cost more from us I would expect. Here is the better one we sell.

Re: water pump drive vs electric pump
Curtis how much are those motors that you sell

I think they are around $97. I would have to double check with the sales guys. I run our manufacturing facility and don't deal with the retail side. They are much better than the little 2 post motors though, in power and rpm. Curtis |
Re: water pump drive vs electric pump
When I used the belt drive pumps, I would order the larger overdrive pulley.
Moroso or Mr. G ? Turns the pump faster. Of course it uses up more juice. |

Re: water pump drive vs electric pump
The Moroso part number 97252 is the larger drive pulley for the electric motor that is 28% faster.

14 teeth opposed to 10 as I seem to recall.

Re: water pump drive vs electric pump
Thanks for all the replies guys, I'm getting a pump drive from a local S/SS racer. Maybe down the road I'll try an electric pump but I still think it would look silly having a "race" electric pump on a 302 2bbl, LOL!!!!

Re: water pump drive vs electric pump
Following up Curtis's post above regarding those good quality 4 post drive motors. Installed one, and it works great. It's about 6 oz. heavier than the current replacement Moroso motor. In my application with a well used water pump, overdrive pulley, and "dry", the 4 post unit draws about 3 Amps vs. the Moroso's 3.5 Amps (roughly 3 yrs. of use).

Re: water pump drive vs electric pump
I don't know if any one is using them on class cars but I am switching to a Davies Craig remote mount water pump. A huge weight savings and they cool some very high HP drag and drive cars.

Re: water pump drive vs electric pump
one good thing about an electric water pump drive is that you can bolt on a light weight plastic fan blade on it and get both with one circuit.

1 Attachment(s)
I got the pump drive all installed and then to wire it, decided to run a 30A in line fuse and a relay to power the pump and the electric fan. Both on or both off, not sure if I'll like that but there it is.
Relay on right shock tower, |
Re: water pump drive vs electric pump
Personally, I always run the water pump separately from the fan. When you are warming up a cold engine, no need to have the high draw of the fan going, slowing down the warm up. Plus I don`t run the fan going downtrack, blowing hot air back towards the carb.

Re: water pump drive vs electric pump
We use the blower motor belt pump on my boy's Stocker and it
cools as well as my aftermarket pump and electric fan. Plus it draws less than 1/2 the amps even running the fiberglass fan than my Pump/Fan setup. We have aluminum Radiators on both cars. Perhaps the aftermarket pumps circulate to fast? |

Re: water pump drive vs electric pump
I had a 2 speed motor from the junk yard but dang I can’t remember what it was off of. Just make sure it has a 1/4” shaft, I even sourced the cog and belt from ‘Mr Gasket’ then made a simple aluminum bracket. Never bought one new in over 50 years. Go to swap meets there’s usually 2 or 3 on a table for 10 bucks.
