Leather accelerator pumps

With the poor quality accelerator pumps currently found in carb kits, will a leather pump hold up with racing gas…renegade 112? 4gc on a super stocker. Thanks.

The trick used to be to soak your leather pump cups in brake fluid to keep them soft, or to soften them up. I use viton pump cups NAPA number 2-4112 in all my carbs .Cost about $7.50 each.

Thanks Lyn for the Napa part number and leather soap tip.

Re: Leather accelerator pumps

I’m thinking the alcohol eats the leather up along with fuel pumps and carbs but with race gas no

Good morning Ed and to all,
Does the 4 GC use the same size pump as the Rochester 2 Barrel or is it the Dia. of the Q-Jet pump?
Its been years since I've been inside one of those carbs.
Have a Good Day.

All racing fuels contain Triethylamine.
They will kill the leather and even the Viton cups that usually come in the carb kits sold at auto parts stores.

I recommend the use of cups sold by companies such as Quadarjet Power, Quadrajet Parts, and others. They sell cups that are resistant to the new generation of fuels and are made from either Butyl, EPDM, Neoprene, or Hypalon rubber.

Henry, the 4gc has a couple different sizes. The one I’m running (1966, 283/233hp) is 21/32” cup and the “long stem” pump. I’m not sure about the 2 barrel carb.

Good morning Ed,
If you have a 21/32' accelerator pump cup then you should be able to use the Quadra Jet pump cups. Just be certain of the size. Then you could use an Edelbrock Q-Jet pump in a pinch, remove the cup and install on your existing pump assembly. That would make getting replacement pump cups easier. Cliffs , Mikes and Quadra Jet parts should be able to hook you up with pump cups. I've been successful with the Blue cups
,there are Red cups available but I have not tried them myself yet. A rebuilder local to me uses these Red cups without issues and he sends carbs out of state. Let me know if you're having trouble locating some pump cups.
Have a Good day.
