Cast crank for Super Stock?

Hi All. I want to jump in with you guys into Super Stock with a slightly oddball combination that does not have a steel crankshaft. This is a small V8 so will spin reasonably fast. I possibly could destroke a longer stroke steel shaft, but it would be quite a bit of effort.

Just looking for similar ish experience, which clearly is not directly comparable. Do the 289 Ford guys use a cast crank and does it hold up? Other combinations?

A cast one is fine.

Built quite a few 680 -720 HP Bracket race BBC with cast cranks 2.200 rods. Turned a few to 2.100 rod journal for SS. The 2.100 eventually cracked.

Ken, If I am correct in my assumption about the combination you are talking about, you could find an ArmaSteel shaft which would be somewhat better. But in any case, the cast crank will be more than adequate and will survive the 8000+ operation range you are anticipating.

I see in the Indy thread that 2 of the 4 stockers in the barn are Pontiac. Does anyone know if they are running a cast crank?

I ran my 455 SD Pontiac in Super Stock, and it has always had a Cast crank/ The rules for SS allow you to run an accepted aftermarket crankshaft, so that may also be a option.

Thanks guys. I'd already started down the road with a stock cast crank, but just started to second guess myself. Time to keep going. Dwight has assumed right on the combo, and unfortunately there is minimal aftermarket support, and no cranks are available.

Kip Martin ran a cast crank and stock rods in his Super Stock Mustang with no problems at all.

I know for certain that the J/SA 400 Pontiac has a stock cast crank.

I ran cast cranks in a couple of my super stock small block chevy engines. Never had a problem with them. I have broke 2 aftermarket steel cranks. Both of those broke because other parts broke first.

Re: Cast crank for Super Stock?

I have seen them both break, mostly due to detonation.

i ran a 390 cast crank for years .. quickest we ever ran with it was 9.70s?
definetly not using cast cranks these days? it was a ticking time bomb waiting to happen ?

How many runs could you get before the crank no longer maged good?

I know several people who have used cast cranks in their 318/340
Superstock engines that run 8000+
I gave them quite a few for free as I do not run them in ours cars.
Most of them have got away from using them anymore.

Re: Cast crank for Super Stock?

It's a 290 AMC, so no aftermarket parts, and pretty much nothing to directly compare. But with a light piston and fairly short stroke I've decided not to worry about it, and mag the crank after a number of passes. These are easy to internally balance.

I think the effectiveness of the damper is one of the biggest factors in crank life, but that's another thing where there is no comparable data.

Re: Cast crank for Super Stock?

the last one i used had 75 runs on it? it was maged good at that time , decided to go 427 shafts ?
