I'm not sure that my list would include Competition Eliminator.

If you compete in NHRA Divs/Nats in any class, you are a class racer in my view. Note, this is a self serving opinion because I considered myself a class racer before building a Stocker when I ran S/ST and S/G.

I'm fine if S/SS gets it's own name or takes over class racing and we give another name to all the other nationally contested classes, I just don't know what that name would be.

Of course you are a class racer and so is every racer that competes in every class contested at LODRS events.

Class Racers run qualified fields based on performance and have heads-up runs.

All of us run a "class". Even bracket racers....

I can live with and respect the opinion. Do we give a name to other NHRA class participants? And what would it be? Is it different from Bracket racing/outlaw index racing?

I have always thought of Class Cars as those that run Class Eliminations, which covers more than just the eliminator.

That said, I will not argue over semantics.

I have always noticed the NHRA fan guide with questions . The official NHRA Program Guide. Look up Stock or Superstock. If you are a spectator reading this description, we are strictly bracket racers. Heads-up no breakout rules are not mentioned anywhere in the descriptions.

Some folks would agree with the OP. Others would consider any Sportsman participants below Top Alcohol at divisionals and nationals to be class racers.

I would tend to agree with the OP based on the large number of classes in each eliminator. But I wouldn't try to pick a fight with anyone who felt differently.

Eliminators with multiple classifications and performance indexes within the same category utilizing a handicap start system.

Here is my take.
Class racers have a specific set of rules that you have to follow. Body type, engine type, weight, tire size etc. no delay boxes. HC start. Set indexes and qualified order

Bracket racers have mostly only safety rules to follow. Any body, engine and weight. TS and TD might have a min weight. delay boxes and power adders. Random pairing

Index racers have weight and index rules that have to be followed. Any engine, body, specific weights, throttle stops delay boxes. Heads up start. Random pair round one. set indexes

Pro and Semi Pro also have specific rules that have to be followed. engine size and chassis type, weight, fuel type, pro tree

Stock, SS and Comp are class racers
TS and TD are bracket racers
SG,SC and S/St are index racers
Pro Mod, TAD and TAFC are semi pro (technically Sportsman)
TF,FC, Pro Stock, Pro stock MC are professional classes

Re: Which Eliminators contain Class Racers?

The terms, "Class" and "Category" get mixed up and misused all the time, which leads to a lot of this confusion on what a Class racer is.
Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, Pro Stock Motorcycle, Top Alcohol, Top Dragster, Top Sportsman, Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street are all Categories. Not Classes.
A/S, G/SA, SS/D, GT/HA, A/SM, D/ED etc., are Classes within their Category. If you race in a Class, you are a Class racer. Period, end of story.

Sounds good to me, hadn't thought of it that way.

This is the best explanation I've heard so far!

Seeing you forgot/left out Bracket Racing. I would find it interesting to hear your take on that category. It does have different classes.

I assume that we don't count because we don't bracket race at the Divisional/National level. Although one bracket class does race at the Divisional level.

1700/STY/781L :)

Classes, in the sense we're discussing, are the way vehicles are grouped in order to handicap or set a standard for performance....as in Stock and SS are pounds per horsepower, and Comp is pounds per cubic inch.
Or even in Land Speed Racing, which is mainly displacement-based.
So no, bracket racing doesn't have class racers.
