Great article in Drag Racing Online

I think that everyone on Class Racer will enjoy reading Bret Kepner article on "My first time" it's a well written and a lot of fun remembering your first time. Maybe some of you can elaborate on your first time(at the races). Claude

1st time @ the races or 1st time racing? I'll go with 1st time racing...the local track opened in 1989 1/8 mile I took /rode my dirt bike down (TT500) to the track & ran in the 9.50's. It was FUN! A year later it was a full blown drag bike with slick a wheelie bars! Running 8.70's! I then build the 1st Novamotion....73 Nova "bracket car" it would run 12.60's 1/4 I won a LOT of money with that car!!!

My first time at a dragstrip was the big Go as it was known at the time, 1967 was a tumultuous time and my older brother had just finish Helicopter training in Palo Pinto at Fort Wolters in Texas, after moving on to the 11th Air Assault Division he decided to take his leave before shipping to Vietnam and take his little Brother to his first drag race. Wow! what a place, buzzing with all types of race cars and names that were my heros from reading Hot Rod Magazine, I gravitated towards the stocker and super stocker. It was quite an eye opening for me, maybe I could even say an overload situation for my sensory processing neurons at the time. Claude

my first time was in my 1972 Chevelle i bought from a car lot called "Clunker Jungle" and the guy that sold it to me was Larry Buckingham. Anyhow that weekend i went to Dragway 42's street car nationals (folks told me i was crazy for racing a car that i was driving to school everyday) and believe or not i won the event and $1000 and only paid $300 for the car.

My first pass down a track on anything was 1997, at Friendship Raceway Park in Steubenville Ohio, a little 1/8 mile track, during one of our S/SS races there. I ran my pit scooter there, than ran a blistering time of 20-something at 30 mph. Once I calmed the tire shake down, it went down the track sucessfully on all it's other runs.

First car was my daily driver 1979 Cutlass at Quaker City in 1999. 260 V8 2 barrel. Ran 21 something. First car I ever won a round and a race in, in 2000 at Quaker. Best run ever was 18.599 @ 74 mph, at about 3,600 pounds.

My first time to the drag strip was Shuffletown Dragway in 1961. My neighbor race a B/G 40 Ford coupe. He was paralized from his waist down and had all of the controls on the steering column. The "young guys" in the neighborhood went to the track with him to put in fuel, air tires, etc. From that point it is amazing how things have changed.
