Battery relocation question (4th gen Camaro)
I understand I need a "barrier" in the back to separate the area the battery is in from the driver's area. I see that there are aftermarket panels that companies sell for the 4th gen F-bodies too. Here's an example: (http://www.wolferacecraft.com/detail.aspx?ID=783) They claim they are NHRA accepted. Options are a "non-spillable" or gel battery? or a sealed battery box. What I'm wondering is if the panels offered by the aftermarket accepted by the NHRA/IHRA so that I don't have to get a battery box. I'm under the impression that gel batteries still need to be in a box?

Re: Battery relocation question (4th gen Camaro)
That piece looks adequate. The idea is to seal the fumes from the driver. The battery needs to be securly mounted behind this seal per regulations but it does not need to be in a box. That is an option and another way to gain ballast should you desire.

Re: Battery relocation question (4th gen Camaro)
The wolfe racecraft panel is the one I have in my bracket car and I have never had a problem with tech even at div ET finals and such where we have to have our cars checked by a NHRA SFI certified inspector. It fit perfectly and install was as easy as can be. I have seen stockers with fuel cells in the trunk that just replace the package tray with a aluminum one but I cant say if its right or not.
Hope this helps Rob |

Thanks guys, that was my understanding also, it just seems like that thing wouldn't create a seal so I was wondering if it would pass tech w/o having the battery in a sealed box.

Re: Battery relocation question (4th gen Camaro)
Wolfe Race Craft manufactures great quality products. I am currently using a lot of their stuff in the construction of my race car and every thing fits like a glove.

If you're concerned about gas fumes you could use body putty on the edges. I think it's called splatz?

Re: Battery relocation question (4th gen Camaro)
If it is not in a sealed box, then it just needs to be separated from the driver compartment with .022" steel or .032" aluminum as a firewall.

Re: Battery relocation question (4th gen Camaro)
AFCO (and a few others) make this really nice battery hanger for like $25.00 (Madman sells them for like $80.00). You can put it in the spare tire area of your car and make a simple sheet metal o aluminum cover to go over that area, then put your factory interior panels back on.
Simple and clean looking. |
