Block Filler?
 

Iam getting ready to fill a block and I was talking to a friend of mine who works at a local Machine Shop,he said they use a epoxy that bowling alley's use to redrill finger holes,anyone herd of this before?

Old school tech, and really expensive compared to contemporary block fillers. ....Both HardBlock and Moroso make grout based fillers specifically for this purpose. ........The expansion rate and density are correct for the purpose..........I've used Hardblock filler for years with no problems on all kinds of engines. ......The weight difference is minimal,since you're displacing the water. .....Usually 8-10# depending on the height of the fill. ......Tom

My preference is Embeco 885 metallic grout. It is non-shrinking and great for applications subject to thermal movement. It contains a cast iron matrix in its composition.

Probably ten years ago, one of my good customers used some type of epoxy to fill a block. I have never seen a block move around so much over the next two seasons. Everytime he would bring it in to freshen up the cylinders, they would be several thousanths out of round. This went on for at least three seasons till he retired it :(

One thing I dont like about the Moroso filler is that they say to wait something like two weeks after filling before you do any machine work. Hard Block is good to go after one day and I have even filled a block after all the machine work was done and had no measurable movement.

That's the stuff to use. Better than Hard Blok, which is better than Moroso.

Because the Moroso filler is a structural epoxy, not an aggregate. HardBlok is an aggregate, containing Silica, Limestone, and a few other components.

Embeco 885, is also aggregate that in addition of containing Silica and Limestone, it contains Portland Cement, Iron Oxide, Quartz and other components. It sets in 8 hours and it does not shrink. This stuff is used by NASA to hold beams for the launch pad for the Space Shuttle and also to make any post-launch repairs to the pad.

It is reasonably priced also, $35 for 55 lb bag .
