Slicks Tread width

Question,,,

Mickey Thompson and Goodyear slicks say 1" +/- tread width and thats what the wheel width should be

Im looking at the following tires on an 8" rim
1) Mickey Thompson 3055
28.1" o.d
10.0" tread width
11.7" section width
measured on a 10" wheel
suggested wheel 10"

2) Goodyear D2001
28" o.d
10.0" tread width
12.0" section width
measured on a 10" wheel
suggested wheel 10"

3) Hoosier 18154C07
28" o.d
10" tread width
11.4" section width
measured on an 8" wheel
suggest 8"-10" wheels

Now, why cant i use the Mickey Thompson or Goodyear on an 8" wheel

If any of these tires were on an 8" wheel would they need more/less pressure than when on a 9" or 10" wheel? Would it have any kind of strange effects due to the fact the wheel width is 2" narrower than the tread width ?

Tires will have tubes, tires will be bolted to the wheels too

Thanks for the help

The tire manufacturers generally tend to know what rim width will give you an acceptable foot print and acceptable handling characteristics with their tire. They design their tires to fit a certain rim width range to give a specific result. They usually know what they're talking about. If you want the 10" tire on an 8" rim, just use the Hoosier tire. They work great.

Being the Goodyear and Mickey Thompson have basically the same specs how do you think they would work? (i was hoping to use Goodyear or Mickey Thompson)

The Hoosier suggests 8"-10"
Hoosier states the Measured Rim @ 8"

Do you see any downsides to this such as having to run less pressure or more? Tire wear etc?

Any thoughts helpfull

My educated guess would be that putting them on a rim narrower than they were designed for would at the very least reduce the width of the contact patch. It may also cause the tire to be less stable with regards to handling.

This is kind of what i thought too plus being its a heavy car

I also thought it may cup the tread and require less pressure than usual so you get a full contact patch

I need to find somebody with a used 28" od and 10" tread width so i can mount it and measure

Re: Slicks Tread width

I gave up trying to run the widest tire possible on my 8" rims, and went to 9" tires, and it has worked better all the way around, (performance, consistency, tire life) for me.
Seems like what I should have been gaining in traction was lost with sidewall and tread section distortion.

I've always been in agreement with the theory that Alan mentioned. A wider rim should allow for more air pressure for better sidewall and top end stability while still providing a full "footprint". Most people I know run a rim 1" wider than the tire tread width.

The more air Pressure you run the better and longer the tire will work. With more air pressure the side walls will last longer and less rolling resistance will make it faster. But running to much air pressure can make the car tend to not hook on marginal tracks,so that must be take into account. With Hoosier the measured rim is for the section width,to get the proper fit.

So will any of those tires hook good on an 8" wheel or only the Hoosier due to the way the section width is?

Re: Slicks Tread width

The section Width is shown to make sure the tire will fit under the car.

Hoosier 18-154
11.4 section width 8" wheel
12.4 section width 10" wheel
