Re: ZL1 stocker
There are a couple in the works (iron block cars), and one aluminum block car ran Pomona last year but broke (he's a member of this board). We have one (aluminum block) but we're not rushing anything.

Re: ZL1 stocker
Much like the Zl-1 Corvettes, yes there are at least 2 ZL-1 Camaros running. My Camaro started with the Aluminum block, but I broke a rod at the 2008 Winternationals. I am now entered at the 2009 Winternationals but have went to a iron block temporarily till I figure a few more things out with combo, because there ain't many people who know much about what this combo wants. It's all trial and error for me, but I am commited to get it figured out. I still feel the H.P. factor is to high an A/SA carrys 3730 lbs which makes it not 60 foot very well. I now have everything in place to move to AA/SA 3508 lbs after Pomona, and then we'll see if I'm on the right track. Many people think that the Aluminum block won't make the power that the iron block will of course not many will spend $4600. to find out. I will go back to the aluminum block by the end of the summer and hopefully it will run better than the 10.34 127 mph it ran at 2008 winternationals.

Re: ZL1 stocker
Leaving the house on saturday, I spotted a 69 Yenko ZL-1 driving downt he road. Couldn't tell you if it was original or a clone, but it sure was nice. Must have been a clone for some fool to be driving it on the streets around Houston.

Re: ZL1 stocker
Save your money. Its been proven before many years ago when NHRA allowed the iron block as a replacement for the alum. block in S/S that it makes more power. The weight difference is the only advantage of the alum. block. It has to do with heat retention. Thats my story and Im sticking to it.

Re: ZL1 stocker
Actually, most have found that when comparing blocks as close to identical as possible except material, the aluminum block moves enough to make the HP difference. Given that aluminum is much less dimensionally stable over temperature variations, several things arise due to things not staying where you want them as the block moves around.
When it comes to heads, identical heads being a given, other than material, then the heat retention theory does indeed hold. If the heads are as dimensionally identical as possible, the iron heads will make more power. |
Re: ZL1 stocker
I believe Dale Howard's Camaro out of Las Vegas is an iron block, aluminum head 427 A/SA built by Gary Hettler. It runs very well.

Alan, you're right. Gary and I talked about that combo last year at Vegas. I haven't seen Dale out for a while but that car is drop dead gorgeous. Almost as fast as Bobby D's.
