71 plymouth scamp build

i want to build a stock eliminator car out of my 71 plymouth scamp and would like a little help with what combination would be best. im thinking of going with the "crate motor" class because the 71 scamp came with a 318 and a 2 barrel carb. are there any tricks and tips on how to make one of these cars fast? thanks for your help!

Isn't that the car the same as a Duster?
You could run a 340 ,4bbl, but get ready to spend some money on it.
Actually, the 318 2bbl isn't too bad at the current rating, but not in P/SA .Maybe in a heavier car

You can do a little research on your own here. First, go to the IHRA website, do a search for their technical information. Find out what Chrysler crate motors are available. Get the horsepower ratings. Next go to the NHRA website and look up the "stock" car classification guide. IHRA doesn't publish theirs online. You can use this to find out the weight of your car. You can take that weight, divide it by the different HP factors of your desired crate engine(s). This will tell you where your car falls class wise. If you don't have a rulebook, PM me with some of the information and I would be glad to assist you in figuring a little of this out.

You can use some of this to compare your combination to the class index(s). Then look for cars running that class and see if your combination is capable of running in those classes.

I'm in the process of attempting to start a crate stocker myself.

Yup, no 340's in a Scamp. One option is to hang a 70 Dart nose on it then you can run it as a 70 Swinger 340 with the 299hp AVS. The Crate motor is a great way to go if you are in a good location to run IHRA events, and it would be much cheaper to build a crate motor car. Good 340 parts are getting harder and harder to find and big $$$$. Biggest problem with that body style is getting a tire under them, but they make a great race car! I had a 71 Dart GT bracket car that was set up like a stocker, worked great, won a lot of rounds with that car.

Good Luck!!!

If you saw "a couple of CM cars running" at the Gators you were drinking too much beer. There are no crate motor cars in NHRA. Not sure what it is that you think you saw, but if they were stockers, they weren't running crate motors, they had to be running engines that originally came in the car.

There is some IHRA activity in Florida, but you would be better off building a non-crate motor stocker so that you can run both NHRA and IHRA events. Crate motor combos are limited to IHRA (so far). Most of the IHRA events are 1/8th mile too. Some guys are OK with that but a lot hate it (me included).

Go buy a car that is race ready, it's a lot cheaper.
