1:82 Powerglide
Will a stock 1:82 gear set hold up in a 2200lb 600hp small block car with a brake?
Thanks |

Re: 1:82 Powerglide
I warrenty OEM 1.82 gearsets right up to the time they pass thru the shop door!..LOL .........At 2200# and a smallblock, a 1.76 OEM set will probably last a long time....You'll probably twist the output shaft before you brake the gearset. ......Tom

Re: 1:82 Powerglide
I used to run one, in a big block 2350-2400 lb car (depending on ballast for track conditions), approximately 600 hp (and likely more torque than a similar hp small block). I probably broke a gearset a season, racing 1 or 2 times a week. Originally I was using a 1.82 for my "regular" trans, with a 1.96 as a spare and for high-elevation races. After breaking a few 1.82's and eventually breaking the 1.96, I switched to 1.76 as a primary, planning to run a 1.82 for elevation (but never got around to having it built). Still on the original 1.76 after a season, will see in a week or so if it still works.

Re: 1:82 Powerglide
I have a friend that would foot brake his 421 sbc and blew his 1.82 out. My trans guy says about stock planetarys "its not if but when" I have twisted the input shaft twice on my 1.76 now have turbo spline and coan super set problem solved.I did run a stout 496 bb with a glide and stock 1.76 wuth a brake for 2 years before I pulled the trigger on the super set and 1.76 never broke I guess I was just lucky.

Tom, can't do anything now as the trans is at the shop. I did tell him to put a new solenoid on it after it's freshened up..........but I'll ck the box when it's back together.........Thanks
