E85 gas
 

Since everyone is going "green", I was thinking that NHRA should allow the useage of E85 in SS/S classes.
Have the original carbs upgraded so that they can adapt to the E85 gas and allow the racer to get away from the ridiculas price of the race gas that is mandated. The E85 gas is about 104 octane and can run with an engine that has 14:1 compression. I for one would gladly change over so that there is nothing but good stuff coming out of my tail pipes instead of carbon and lead. There could also be a promotion from NHRA that their eleminator classes are doing good for the inviroment.

Hold on not all that easy as updating carbs!1 Some oe the old cards may not have big enough internal passages. Need more E-85 than gas + bigger fuel pumps & regulators, may need new fuel cell/tanks & lines. Carefull what you wish for! You need to research this fully.

WHOA.......it'd be a 150 mile roundtrip for me to get a can of that stuff !!!!!!
And a whole new fuel system and a HOLLEY CARB........NHRA wouldn't like that !!! :-)
It is not a simple switch over at all.....and not cheap....

The quality of E85 is so completely inconsistent that a couple of carburetor companies actually sell testing kits so you can verify the alcohol content. Which has been known to vary between 70% and 90%, give or take.

I'm not saying you need to run E85 in SS/S, but allow it as a spec fuel. As for a Holley carb, well I guess all the older vehicles it came standard equipment. I for one would switch over for sure because I'd rather spend $2.23 a gallon on E85 (also which is government subsidized) then $6.00 a gallon on Sunoco purple or the bigger ripoff VP C12 @ $10.50 a gallon. Racing is expensive enough and alternatives should be allow to reduce costs at all levels.

I wish theyd allow a pump gas unleaded premium fuel. My 89 mustang stocker/ bracket car runs 12.61 on unleaded premium, under $3 a gal, but c12 is over $ 8 by the barrel
