Pontiac 326

Does anyone know if a Pontiac 326 has been raced successfully in Stock Eliminator? I know that Pontiac Firebirds with 400 cubic inch motors have been successful; but what about a 1966 LeMans with a 326 factored at 285 HP?
JR

Those were really fast ,pure stock, with a stick shift. But nowadays, forget it. Needs about 50 hp off it.
Only thing it's got is cam and compression. Compared to the later stuff,.... lousy heads, intake, carb.
2 speed automatic, too.

I remember a nearly new 1963 Tempet with a 285HP 326 that used to show up with Bucrons and a 3-speed transaxle and run 90 mph pure stock. I don't know his e.t., but the 90 mph sounded pretty impressive to me, for the HP. He beat a lot of people with that car...

But, that was then; this is now...

Sure they did. 280 hp with stick shift. Check the guide.

NHRA guide is wrong.

I looked at them new in 63 before going into the service. No 4 speed and no 4 barrel.
Bought a Dodge when I got out and never looked back.

The NHRA guide is NOT wrong. I had a friend that bought a new LeMans in 1963 and I saw it the day he brought it home from the dealer. 326 w/4 bbl and a 3 speed. I bought a used one in 1965 that had been run hard. It had a blown-up 389 and a 4 speed trans axle, that were transplanted, but I was told that it also was an origional 326 4 bbl car.
Incidentally, the 63 326 was actually a 336. It had a slightly larger bore than the later 326s.

Mark,
Thanks for the info. Would you say the same for a '66 Pontiac in GTO trim with the 335 HP 389? Same 2-speed transmission, same Carter carb, same valve size (though different heads), more compression and more cam lift???

Same deal there. The 62 389 has de-factored quite a bit, so there's a precedent there.
You'd have to live with a 1.76 low gear too

You could write a letter to 1-800- CRY-NHRA, but I hear that office is boarded up.
