Ts/td
Comp Plus is reporting that TS/TD will be coming to our neighborhood in 2010 at "selected" national events. For now probably one race per division.Looks like they'll be slowly pushing out some other sportsman fields.Looks like there might be a lot of expensive bracket/show car/garaged cars in the future.
I can see NHRA looking to freshen up national events. It doesn't look very good for S/SSs future though, and I think a lot of it has to do with the make up of national event fans.I believe the majority aren't "car" people, more thrill seekers. That's why,for example, the stands empty when the super categories come out. S/SS is in the same boat. Our cars are older than a large percentage of them. There's no connection.Sure some come over and say they,or someone they know has/had one,but they are far and few between. Hope I'm wrong but I think we're reliving the extinction of the dinosaurs. |
Re: Ts/td
Gosh I think i said this about a month ago, numbers are BIG for TD & TS, lets put it this way the numbers are big for Top eliminators
Here is the yearly head count so far: TAD 96 TAFC 98 TD 561 TS 375 Comp 259 SS 745 Stock 978 and the Super classes, well i do their stats and not taking the time to count them, but its big numbers too. boy looking at the those numbers i do stats for, i ask myself why i still do them. lol |
Re: Ts/td
I've been wondering about this too, amid the rumors, and I will still say the glass is half full, not half empty. No where, that I have read, says we are getting phased out yet. It just easier for them to do.
I dont think you can have a drag race (Nat'l Event) without Stock and SuperStock. It isnt dead yet, so flame away. |

fuel check and teardowns into consideration wouldn't you rather run TS/TD down the track than us pesky, whinny S/SSers if you were NHRA.Much less staff and labor intensive. |

[QUOTE=Kenny Wigington;
I dont think you can have a drag race (Nat'l Event) without Stock and SuperStock. [/QUOTE] This is not a flame but dont kid yourself. Do you REALLY think spectators come to watch stock and S/S? As much as I love them Im afraid they are a dying breed because of reasons stated many times before. IF and thats a very large IF they were to drop catagories and replace them with T/D and T/S I think it would be the .90 classes first. NHRA is looking for a SHOW and something eaiser to police. Stock and S/S is a pain for them to police and keep up with (AHFS, specs, weightm fuel check, etc) The .90 classes are not a show to the general spectator and all of the explainning to them by the announcers about WHY they start, stop, and go again will never change that. The spectators like the heads up races, speeds, the noise, and even the exlposions. Everyone else is just filler. |
Re: Ts/td
Billy Meyer was 20 years ahead of his time with the T/S and all .90 racing.
I love S/SS too, but it is a dying breed and aggravating to police. Chip Johnson |
Re: Ts/td
It has nothing to do with which category draws spectators.Nitro Joe says there are 1723 stock and ss racers. Many more in the 3 super category classes. All these racers pay membership, and entry fees to the NHRA Divisions for Divisional, and open races. The tracks pay NHRA big bucks to host the Div. races. As long as there are points races, there will be sportsman racing in all categorys. They wont be able to pick a category,or two to run at National events. If they eliminate sportsmen racing from national events, then it will die out at the divisional level too.

Re: Ts/td
So what's the scoop with the independent S/SS association(s) that were buzz earlier this year? .According to Nitro Joe's stats, there is enough niche marketing power in the sportsman ranks to keep a new organization afloat. Look at the # of contingency sponsors. That plus some fine marketing skills should make us independent with some coin in our pocket at the end of the race. If we shrink or retreat we can trade in our sportman clunkers for universal health car.

Re: Ts/td
Lyn is right.
Dave it is dying though. No new blood coming into the S/SS ranks. Most new comers come into the super classes then work up to T/S-T/D. Truth. Chip |
