AFX Question
Can someone tell me what the "X" signified for the AFX class of racecars? Probably the same for the Plymouth GTX? There's a debate going on in another forum and I figured you guys with all your history and expertise could an answer.
Thanks |

Probably A/ Factory "Experimental"

Re: AFX Question
Bruce is correct.

Re: AFX Question
That is correct, altered wheel bases, injected. Don't think it has the same meaning for the "GTX".

Re: AFX Question
Historically, the "FX" designation was on the scene at least a couple of years before things began to go crazy with altered wheelbases and injectors. Some of the first "FX" cars I remember were late '63 models that were provided with carburetor and camshaft enhancements by supporting factories and they had no requirements regarding the number of identical units produced or show-room available. They endured teardowns and had rules just like the rest of us but were frequently exactly what Bruce suggested, "experiments" by the factory prior to the next new model year. I believe that camshafts were not regulated but they ran on 7" tires at the outset. At first, even the Mopar altered wheelbased cars were equipped with carburetors although they were banned from NHRA participation as Super Stockers or even "FX" competitors due to the obvious chassis modification. As I recall, the injectors came a few months later. The public was so enamored of the factory "wars" that things snowballed very rapidly on the match-race circuit and the rest is well-recorded history.
