Jercio whats the fix ?

Have any of you guys ran into this problem and what might be the fix with this combo . Its a Jerico and a Long shifter with the pin and small gate for the first gear lockout kit added to it . But sometimes on the 2 to 3 shift it shifts goes back into 1st and not into 3rd . Odd thing is its worked well for a couple of years it just started this year.????????????????????? Ken R

Send that shifter to Nick at Long Shifters for a rebuild. It will come back with an alum pistol grip shifter and like new for under $300. That 1-2-1 deal sucks. I can hear the rods stretching from here. My 2 cents. Jim

Both of my cars have the older style Long V gate shifters without the added gate, and I `ve never had this problem. Any chance that you may inadvertantly not letting go of the small trigger handle after launch? Otherwise I would have to think that either the trigger spring is too weak, or maybe there is some grit in the trigger linkage causing a binding situation.

Ken,

You had the same weekend I did. I also had this happen this weekend a few times. I already have the small curved "lockout tab" for lack of better term on the shifter. I had this 2nd to 1st problem last year which is when I sent the shifter to Long for a rebuild and the "lockout tab". I took the trans out today and everything inside is A.O.K. I must say it is really an neck snapping experience the first time you go from the top of 2nd back to first. I had this happen three times this weekend and I am not too happy with the shifter at the moment. I am calling Long tomorrow (Tuesday).

Thanks guys I'm just goin with my gut instinct and polishing all of the moving parts of the trigger and going up on the spring pressure on the two side springs .

Re: Jercio whats the fix ?

I called Nic at Long today and he gave me his take on things. One of his local customerr had this happen on a Jerico DR4 box recently that had a lot of runs on it sort of like mine. What they traced the problem back to was the detent bullets being worn. What happens is that there was enough moving inertia of the 1/2 slider and fork to overcome the detent and it would engage 1st again on the 2 to 3 shift. I have had my Jerico box apart many times and I never gave the wear on the detent bullets any thought. I believe how to fix the problem is to preload the detent bullets as much as you can to increase the force that the detent bullet has on the internal sliding shifter shaft rail. You can do this by tightening down the allen set screws on the top of the case that hold in the detent springs. I did this when I got home from work and it increased the required force to move and shift from one gear to the next on the 1st and 2nd by a lot. I had the allen set screw almost flush to the top of the case which allowed a very easy movement of the 1/2 shift fork. By tightening the set screw down I believe could be the answer along with keeping the shifter lubed up. Nic stated they were looking into the idea of putting a real 1st gear lockout on the shifter like the 5 speed shifters have. He told me to check back with them in a few weeks because they might have something ready then.
