71 Mustang Question

Was a 71 Convertible Mustang available with Mach 1 stripes and a Ram Air 351 Cleveland 4bbl ??

I'm trying to find out for a friend who is looking at one.

Angelo,

The convertible could be had with the Cobra Jet 4-bbl engine and Ram-Air, but a convertible is a Code 03 car I believe, and the Mach 1's were Code 05. The Mach 1 stripes were very popular at the time, and many people had their cars "Mached 1'd " so to speak with the stripe upgrade right at the dealership. The Mach 1 Stripes were available in 1972 also, but were changed in 1973. However, you'll still see numerous 1973 cars with the earlier stripe kits because they're just better looking. I'm no expert, but that's what I've dug up in my references. 6121 Convertibles by the way -- 36,499 Mach 1's.

Re: 71 Mustang Question

If the pedigree of the car is important, verify that the vin code matches the powertrain. The Ram Air hood was available with the 2 or 4v carb in '71. If the stripes you refer to as "Mach 1" are actually the Boss 351 style treatment, I believe they could have been ordered on the convertible, sportsroof(fastback), or coupe as an option and as part of one of the decor groups.

My favourite is a coupe with the Boss 351 stripes - and a stick. Had a chance to buy one years ago......you know the rest of the story.

I'm leaving work in 30 minutes to look at a '71 M Code Mach 1 that I built motor almost 30 years ago. Car has been sitting for last 27 years and looking at pictures looks pretty much just like it did 30 years ago except for paint. Does need restoring but is very nice. 351C 4BBL with FMX auto. Red with black interior. Tweo owner car with low miles and a very, very good price.

My understanding from the Ford book back then is the Ram Air was offered in 1971 on both the 351C 4V and the 351 4V Cobra Jet which was a late '71 low compression version of the '72 351C 4v. but only on 2bbl's in 1972. The three guys I knew who had the 1972 4 speed 351C HO (Low compression Boss motor for '72) did not have the chance to order ram air.

The stripes may have been offered by the factory but could have been applied by the dealers as the Mach1/Boss 351 logos are not attached to the body side stripes but come with the trunk stripe kit..

Re: 71 Mustang Question

Ram Air was standard on the 71 Boss cars. I believe it was also standard on the 429 Drag Pak cars. In 71 I think you could order Ram Air on just about any 351 or 429. As we found a low horse 4bbl 4 speed coupe equipped with Ram Air. 72 was Ram Air was only available with the two barrel cars.
Now you could get the Ram Air hood on 4bbl cars but not the actual Ram Air package.

Re: 71 Mustang Question

A lot of people are unaware that the '71 Mach I package could be ordered with or without the "hockey stick" stripes, which a lot of people refer to as "Mach I" stripes.

A Mach I ordered without the stripes had a different treatment on the sides. A non-striped car had the lower rocker panel black-out, but the transition point from the blackout to the body color had a stainless steel trim that ran the full length of the car. When the hockey stick stripes were ordered, the stainless trim was deleted and there was an additional narrow black tape stripe at the transition between the rocker blackout and the body color.

I have seen a lot of cars that were originally non-stripe that had the hockey stick added later. They are easy to spot since the stainless trim is almost always still there since if you remove it you have a bunch of holes in the door and quarter panels.

My car was originally a 4 speed, 4.11:1 drag-pack 429SCJ (which always had ram-air), without the hockey stick stripes, hence it has the stainless trim. In fact, the ONLY option on my car other than the drag pack was an AM radio. Even the tachometer was an option, and my car doesn't have that either. No power steering, no power brakes. Must have been an interesting car to drive on the street!

BTW, there are a LOT of 71/72 Mustangs out there, Mach 1 and otherwise, with front and rear spoilers. The rear spoiler was available on any fastback car: Mach 1, Boss 351 or regular "sportsroof". But the front spoiler was ONLY available on the Boss.
