Engine Hoists

I'm looking into getting my own engine hoist. I would like one that folds up to store and has a long enough boom to even reach it in the tech barn, since I guess some can't reach the engine there.....lol What brand do you recommend or have experiences with. Thanks, Randy

Re: Engine Hoists

Many people (myself included) own Harbor Freight engine hoists and
their "top of the line" fold up unit sells for around $250. But also look
at Northern Industries or just google to find other brands. I'm sure you
will find stuff from $150 to $1000 depending on quality, etc.

I went the cheap route and found a bolt together engine hoist on craigs-
list minus the ram for $40, then a new ram from HF on sale for $40.
It works fine on my concrete garage and RV parking pad. probably
would not work too well on gravel or grass/dirt.

Re: Engine Hoists

Harbor Freight had their 2,000 pound "cherry picker" with the fold-up legs on sale just after Thanksgiving, for $99.95. Dunno when it will be on sale again, but, I imagine it will.

Another wonder of Chinese engineering, I can't vouch for its durability or quality of construction, but it looks like every other tool of its type that I've ever seen....

We'll see....

careful buying those shorty fold up engine hoists. I had one, used it sold it. it will not go high or long enough for some cars. and does not work on trucks paid 100 sold for 100. went back to the old tried n true oldie. many more adjustments on it for ease and safety. I will never buy the cheapie short one again.

One feature that I saw on a friend's cherry picker was the ram extended on both strokes, not just the down stroke. Speeds things up a little bit.

Got mine at Costco years ago for $179.00. Has six casters, 1 ton capacity, and enough reach and height to pull a 454 over the core support of a 1986 C30. Takes up 24"X30" of floor space
