ss/gt questions

I have a 83 camaro, does anyone know if you can remove the rubber/plastic material from the steel brackets that are attached to the frame under the bumper covers? The rule book states "The front and rear bumpers must be attached to the chassis using the OEM impact bars", I am a little confused as to what they mean by the words impact bars.
Thanks in advance for any input.

The "impact bars" are the steel bumper behind the bumper cover, the actual bumper. They don't want you to remove them and hold the cover by making lightweight brackets. I don"t think you're allowed to remove the foam stuff legally.

I think that Randy Broadbent has found some of those in Alumn. They don't save that much weight for the cost. He might be able to chime in and give you the figures. I can't remember them exactly. You can also get plastic head lights instead of glass. They are a few pounds lighter and safer... dont break and put glass on the ground in front of your car.

Must have the steel impact bar, trash the rubber that is on front of it. There are some alum impact bars out there (expensive) but the offshore replacements are just as light. plastic headlights are 2-3# lighter.
