anybody try a 700r4 with the low first gear?????????

It's very heavy internally. The forward input drum is weak, and there is no real serious fix. There are other durability issues. I've gotten them to live "okay" at around 450HP or so in cars lighter than 3450#. They have a terrible drop between 1st and 2nd gear.

I think the first gear is to low in most applications, not allowing the converter to multply torque as efficiently on the foot brake.

You can take gear out of the rear end to solve the excess low gear, but nothing solves the excessive drop between 1st and 2nd. It is possible, with machine work and welding, to make the low gear in a 700 2.75 instead of 3.06. But it just isn't worth the effort or expense.
