Which housing are you using? It makes a difference.

Re: 9" Ford diff gear oil

9" fords need extra gear lube. the front bearings do not oil as well in race conditions as in a street car. using a smooth spool actually makes matters worse as there is nothing to 'throw' oil up to the top tunnel which oils the front bearing.
some cases have a front plug [driver side] which can be checked for lube. some housing have a factory fill hole. if you have one of these type case/housing...then you may have to tip the car to one side to add extra lube. fill to 'normal' and then add, ad minimuuuun 1/2 pint if you have neither, then you most likely have a welded filler towards to the top. you will have to design a dip stick. something on the order of half way.
2 1/2 quarts is about right, unless you have a very narrow housing.
using a spool, you can use snythetic lube. which will help ET. if someone is using a ford trac-lok or some other type of clutch differential, DO NOT use snythetic lube or any additive which would normally used for street use.
also remember extra lube requires extra time to warm the lube to a good operating temp. thick lube costs ET.

Good info thanks. I am thinking 3 litres should be good, housing is narrowed. Checked with a buddy today and he uses 3 litres in his narrowed 9" Camaro and just ran 5.70's last weekend. ( about 1/2 second quicker than I hope to go eventually). 1 Us Quart = .946 ml. ...
