No hand brake allowed?

I have heard of the "no hand brake" rule in S/C dragsters. I was told that racers had to remove the hand brake handle, and hand it over in tech. It was returned at the end of the day/event. I can't believe NHRA would have you dismantle and make useless, a perfectly good brake system. Whats next, the chute? The secondary brake system is there for additional braking capability should it be needed, for whatever reason. There's alot of torn up race cars (as well as injured and/or killed drivers) out there that would'nt have been, with a secondary brake system. I sure hope they're not disabling a perfectly good "SAFETY" component, because of a driver behavior issue?

Its not a personal preference......its actually in the rules...written years ago for the pro cars I think....we are trying to get it changed....

Sorry Rock, I should have been clearer. By "they" I meant NHRA. I don't know why they would not want a hand break. Some of the pro-stockers use them.

Re: No hand brake allowed?

Is the issue a secondary braking system or a hand brake? I had a secondary (front brakes only) several years ago on a dragster, it worked great for static burnouts and unloading from the trailer. At the PHX national event they made me unhook it. At that time it was called the John Force Rule, he used secondary braking to let the computer reduce tire shake.

Re: No hand brake allowed?

this might be a dumb question but how would the hand brake make unloading from the trailer easier?

I ease the car out of the trailer standing along side of it while using the hand break to keep it slow. Benefits are that it is easy for one person to unload the car and you can unload it without weight in the car so no dragging on the bottom of the trailer.
