Re: 68 dart combo
Can you use a 340 in a 68
|
Re: 68 dart combo
Yes, that was the first year the 340 came out.
A couple of slant 6's, 273, 318 and 383 were also available. But the plan is normally to find a combo that you can afford to make run the furthest under the respective index. Otherwise, something that will run under the index but not be in a class too populated with faster cars that can outrun you in the occasional heads-up race. |
Re: 68 dart combo
Yes 68 Dart GTS 340 hardtop or convertible. Maybe even better is the 383 combo for now....

Re: 68 dart combo
Thanks guys.
I'm Gene Abbott. I run supergas. Want to build a stocker so I can run it and maybe put grandson or son in it when they're ready. Would like to get educated before I start. Thanks |
Re: 68 dart combo
I got curious because I had a 68 GTS with a 383 back in the early 70's.
We used it to tow our Z-28 for a while until we got a truck. I put fenderwell headers on it and it made it a different ride!! Really picked up the power over the restrictive ex manifolds. I noticed a few '73 340's (rated 293) in Nitro Joe's stats that were in G/SA and running pretty good. The lone 383 was about half way down the list. I looked at the class guide and the 340 is listed @ 10.92 and the 383 @ 11.08. That makes the weight just a few pounds different. Wouldn't it be easier to move the 383 up and down in classes and it have an advantage? Fit in 3 classes and the 340 in just 2??? It might be slightly under rated at 295 vs the 299 NHRA HP for the 340. Small carb seems to be the only bad thing about it. After looking at the blueprint specs I might consider the 340--- .5 more compression (didn't figure the actual, just used the listed) about .030 more lift on both the in and ex. similar valve sizes and a piston with a notch for valve clearance as well as a better spring design (W damper). Same carb size...Did notice one of the good casting #'s for the 383 head..... Humm!! I have no experience with either engine as a stocker, but the specs would have me leaning toward the 340. This might be one of those toss ups.... What you mopar guys say? |

Adger,
The 340 will also have about 50-75 lbs less weight on the nose over the 383. |
Re: 68 dart combo

Inlaws in town this weekend. Don't know if I'll make it to the track or not. Thanks. I'd love to talk to you. Gene |
