bump steer kits, legal or not
I've heard that bump steer kits are not legal in stock, but I continually see pictures of cars with them. Anyone have a definitive answer?

Re: bump steer kits, legal or not
I inquired about this ..........D1 tech told me absolutly no to heims and spacers in Stock, Yes in SS. ......When I called FJ Smith to order one of his F body kits that uses a stock type tie rod end ,he told me there is a lot of confusion as to the legality of the heim and spacer kits, especially in D2................BTW , FJ's kit does the job ,still some bump, but within reason. ......Tom

Re: bump steer kits, legal or not
Travis from Division 3 told us absolutely no in stock!
Yet, I see several late model "F" body GM stockers with them. |
Re: bump steer kits, legal or not
Outside of the confusion --division to division--wouldn't a bump steer kit be considered a safety item considering most of the cars wheelstand. Is it because it just another thing to check as far as quality of the heim joints ( as we all know there is good and there is just cheap ). Or is it something they picked so as keep the price of a stocker down and if thats the case they blew it with the camshafts. Me , myself, when it comes to steering, i want the best and I believe the other drivers would feel the same way.

Or some people should avoid driving race cars that have rules which they are not comfortable with!

Re: bump steer kits, legal or not
Where exactly in the rule book does it state that they are a prohibited item? Have these tech guys pointed this out, or is it just their opinion?

Re: bump steer kits, legal or not
I installed a bump steer kit on a Stock Eliminator Firebird for a Division IV racer this winter and he assured me that he had Wesley's blessing to do so.

Re: bump steer kits, legal or not
i don't know about "bump steer kits", but it seems a little ridiculous that some tech guy/ wanna be cop, says they are ilegal, when most late-model f-bodies use a pinto rack. the pinto rack, having been approved for stock way back when there was also the '98 LT-1 thing and the narrowed rear. too late to change now. those were all factory pontiac things, just like the stuff ford and mopar are pushing with the cobra jet and drag pack.

Quote:
It does say under stock section: POWER STEERING May be removed or converted to manual steering. See General Regulations 3:3. SUSPENSION, Front Must retain complete stock front suspension system as produced by manufacturer for body used. Lift kits/travel limiters prohibited. Sway bar optional. See General Regulations 3:4. And under general regulations is says: 3:3 STEERING Each car’s steering system must be secure and free of defects. All butt-welded parts must have additional visible reinforcement. Only conventional automotive steering systems are permitted; flexible steering shafts prohibited. Rear-wheel steering prohibited, unless vehicle was originally manufactured with an OEM system. An OEM system may not be modified, altered, or used in any manner inconsistent with manufacturer’s specifications. PLEASE tell me what vehicle came with an OEM or factory production or conventional automotive steering system that had a bump steer kit on it. |
Re: bump steer kits, legal or not
Until the rule book states "no heims" in the steering system, I will argue with any tech guy out there that they are legal.
Does this same thought apply to say caster/camber plates? What about modified spindles to allow aftermarket brakes to be used? |
