Dana 60 Housing Straighting
Went to put Dana in my Demon and noticed Housing was visibly bent by eyeball inspection. Can they be straightened? If axles go in easily after fixed are they straight or should they be dial indicated. I guess I might be smarter replacing axle tubes? Do you know anywhere that straightens them in So Cal/Nv/Az.
Appreciate any feedback....Thanks |
Re: Dana 60 Housing Straighting
How about getting ahold of Phil Mandella at PMR race cars. He might know someone. Good luck.

Re: Dana 60 Housing Straighting
John since it is bent have Phil put the molly tubes on it. Just make sure he puts the right spacing for the brakes. On my Challenger he put ford spacing on one side and Mopar on the other.

Re: Dana 60 Housing Straighting
John,
If not Phil Mandella, try Ed Sutton @ Sutton Engineering in La Habra CA. it is on Imperial Blvd off Harbor Blvd in the old Boyd Coddington hot rod facility. |
Re: Dana 60 Housing Straighting
Rod does that housing (your old one) have stock tubes on it now...I take it you recommend CM. IS it MW axles spool?
Thanks John Irving |
Re: Dana 60 Housing Straighting
Yes John it was a stock B body housing narrowed for the Demon. It has MW 40 spline rifle drilled axles and aluminum spool.

Re: Dana 60 Housing Straighting
i have straightened several '55-'56 chevy and several 9" fords. they are easy if you know how. dana 60/chevy 12 bolts are tricky with the pressed in tubes. especially if only one tube is out.
if you have a housing the correct width, then you should weld the tubes to the center casting. then have the housing straightened by a pro, who will guarantee it to be right. when you take it to any shop, have it welded and you will need to have the carrier in place with caps torqued to specs, and axles in place. [the pinion does not need to be in place or backing plates] before it is corrected. if you are using a cast alumunuuuuuuuum bracing cover or a tin original, have it in place also. anything to keep distortion to a minimuuuuum. to save future heartache, make sure you have all the brackets welded in place. sometimes you can weld on a tube and not move anything, other times you are right back were you started from. that's a waste of time and $. rod in AZ |
