8.5" rear end - 68 Camaro
After our season completed at Mid America Motorplex, we trekked to Kearney for one last weekend of racing at Kearney Nov 6 & 7.
On my 5th pass, the rear gear broke about 8 teeth. It is a 8.5" rear end out of a 70s Camaro. It has a spool and cclip elim kit...and 28 spline axles. (I know...not "legal"). Anyways, it is time to replace the parts. I am not buying a crate rear end. We also have 2 junior dragsters and my oldest enters private high school next fall....ouch. I have acquired a replacement 8.5" housing from a 74 or 75 Nova which is the stock 67-69 Camaro width. I have 2 options--which one would you recommend? 1. Buy a friend's 33 spline Strange 12 bolt axles and then a new spool, gears, etc 2. Buy the 33 spline complete kit from Strange which is on sale The car ran 11.05 at 122 the pass before it let go. Small block chevy, th350 footbrake with a 4600 ATI, and 4.10s going through the traps at 6400. I plan on going with 4.56s as well. The engine made hp to 7000 on the dyno. I dont plan on using a trans brake anytime in the near future. Thanks, Clark |
Re: 8.5" rear end - 68 Camaro
Buy the spool, axle and bearing kit and do it right the first time.(option 2) You can't believe what damage sudden rear end destruction can do.You never save in the long run when you have to do it over. Also, you need more gear--4:88's or so.

Never mind.

Thanks Greg. With a 327, this could go stock eliminator with zero other changes.
