What gear ratio? 283 stocker
Building a 1965 Chevy II wagon stocker, 283/220, Jerico trans, MT 29.5x9 stick tire. Trying to complete car before I start on my homebuilt motor. Got a new 12 bolt housing and axles but what gear ratio do I need? Do I need a pro gear? What rpm will a 283 stocker motor turn? Thanks in advance, Chris

Re: What gear ratio? 283 stocker
Look at your dyno sheet and that will tell you when to shift. If you didn't dyno then a safe bet will be 6800-7000 and a 5:13 to a 5:38 gear..use a pro gear, you have a heavy car and a stick...just my WAG...good luck and have fun...Luke SS 311

Re: What gear ratio? 283 stocker
I have used 5.38, 5.57 and 5.86 in mine. the 5.86 was the best.

Re: What gear ratio? 283 stocker
If it was me I would buy a new 5.38 to "shake the car down" the 5.38 shouldn't be to much gear....then when you get everything working I'd look & see if I could find a used 6.14 or 5.86 to see what that would do...that way you could find the max gear it would take...I know of several cars that run the 6.14 (their all heavy). Then you could go from their. (rem not all cars are alike)

Re: What gear ratio? 283 stocker
Absoulutely use Pro gear in stick. use formula to get close, mph X gear ratio X 336 divided by tire height = RPM On stick car will be almost dead on calculation.
