aluminum flakes in oil filter

SBC new with 100 runs and third oil change.Cut filter open and found 3-4 real small pieces of what looks like aluminum.A magnet will not pick it up and no copper. So where do you think it came from?

My first guess would be thrust bearing, but it's anyone's call. If it were my new motor at 100 runs I'd leak it and if all was well, I'd take it apart and check it just to be safe. At least pull the pan to see if there are any more pieces waiting for you there. It's better that you take it apart now than have it fly apart later on its' own.

You should be able to check for excessive crankshaft end play with a minimal amount of dis-assembly.

if you have aluminum rocker arms and big daimeter springs the rockers could be rubbing against the springs. Pull a few of the rockers off and look for marks.

If you are running Aluminum heads, then check around the valve spring pads. Springs )if not sitting in a cup) will break aluminum shavings loose
