engine block storage
 

I am going to store away a sbf bare block and would like the block, cylinders, lifter bores,:o not to rust, and was hoping on some tips to keep the block in decent condition for a year or two. Live in Indiana and the garage is not heated at all times.:o Steve Willie Williams S/G351N

cozmolean , spelled wrong but same stuff used on guns for long storage. It wont break down.

CRC has a long term storage product in a spray can sotra like the old cosmlin that Ford spray on cranks and cly bores before shipping

I think the most important issue is where you are going to store them. I have some blocks and cranks at the shop that I have had for at least 10 years. They were cleaned in our oven and steel shot blasted so they are perfectly clean bare metal. They are in bags with maybe a light coat of WD40. They still look like the day they were cleaned.

The key is temperature control. We keep the shop at around 75 degrees year round. If the temperature does not change a lot, they will stay like new forever. If you put them in an unheated garage its a different story. They will turn to rust in a few months :(

So, if you can keep them in a basement you should be ok. If they are going to be in a garage or shed, then load them up with WD40, coat the cylinder walls and other machined surfaces with engine oil and you should be ok for a couplt of years. Just take a look at them every once in a while.

Dont want to hi-jack the thread here, but Bill K. We should be seeing you soon. My new boss took on a job where we get to redo a 56 tbird engine, and you do all his machine work. Finally ill be able to meet you in person lol. BTW, my new boss is Greg Ramsey. Small world right? Going to try and get the motor to you in the next few weeks. So, we shall meet. Talk to you soon.
