69 Camaro brake options
69 Camaro with original power front disc/rear drum setup, required by class to run stock/oem type setup
- front discs have been a constant battle over the years w/ pads wanting to drag excessively...is there an old school fix for this? Rotors appear warped, so they're gonna need attention. - rear drums were out of round as well, they're being turned and hopefully they will true up...any advice/options for the rear? Other than switching it over to manual drums, what was the old school brake setup on these GM cars? |
Re: 69 Camaro brake options
Get rid of the brake drag, you can run after market brakes in Stock class. There are a multitude of brake kits available, Strange, Mark Williams and others stop the drag. Its a matter of what you want to spend.

Re: 69 Camaro brake options
I talked to a couple of brake places about their front calipers, and they said they all drag (at least a little), that's just the nature of disc brakes...?

Re: 69 Camaro brake options
Stock master cylinders, and some stock systems, often include a residual pressure valve. It is not necessary unless the master cylinder is mounted below the calipers and wheel cylinders. So you do not need one.
A 69 Camaro was available with 4 wheel disc brakes, and the pieces can be found. Not sure what your rules actually specify, since you say "stock/oem type setup". Stock GM stuff does not lend itself well to really self retracting. All calipers drag at least a little, since the pedal would be low and require a lot of travel if the pads really retracted any appreciable amount. In order to keep drums from dragging, you have to run them loose, usually about 4-6 clicks back from the normal self cleaning and self actuating position you would use for street driving. |

Re: 69 Camaro brake options
Do the aftermarket calipers release/drag less than the original units? I have good brakes, but have always fought the pads dragging a tag more than what I *thought* they should. Same with the rear...even with the adjusters backed all the way off, there seems like a touch of drag?? If I went 4 wheel discs, wouldn't I be fighting the dragging pads as with the fronts???

Re: 69 Camaro brake options
My Baer front disc brakes have hardly any drag. I read somewhere else around here about shimming the caliper one side or the other to center the rotor "perfectly".
My front wheel will rotate several times before stopping while on the jack stands.... Clark |
