Chevy six cylinder Identification.
Bought a 60s chevrolet with a straight 6 .The Id block on the engine has a CE code on it,and the casting numbers tell me it is a 68,or 69 motor. Can anyone tell me what this was in originally, and its size? the engine might possibly be out of a truck. thanks

Re: Chevy six cylinder Identification.
Lyn, I can't find a CE code but when I get out to the shop I'll look in some older books. Assuming it's not a 292, if it is a 68-69 casting date it can only be either a 230 or 250. If the balancer is a single cast pully it is a 230. A double cast pully would be a 250.

Re: Chevy six cylinder Identification.
"CE" means "counter exchange" which shows that somewhere, sometime the original motor or block was replaced with the CE block or motor. With casting number, you should be able to narrow down what it is and somewhere on it will be a casting date.

Re: Chevy six cylinder Identification.
Lyn you may already know this but "if" you have the head off a 230 is flat top 250 is a dish engine....their the same bore. The stroke & piston are all that was changed from 230 to 250.

Re: Chevy six cylinder Identification.
As Terry said, a CE stamping is an 'over the parts counter' replacement motor.
No way externally to tell a 230 from a 250 as they used the same blocks and the same heads. From what Billy said about the pulleys you might can tell what the original engine was. I never noticed that single pulleys came on 230's and double pulleys came on 250's. I always thought it was if the car originally had power steering or A/C that deterimed the difference in pulleys. |
Re: Chevy six cylinder Identification.
230s have a bolt on second pulley for P/S.
