I used to have one of those cars, you will never be completely satisfied until you lower the engine. Your best option is to use what clearance you have and be satisfied, I found very little performance gain in clearances and playing with spacers. Cutting the hood is not an option but I have seen some that the space had been increased by flattening the hood brace a little but then you have a whole new problem. That body style is not a very good choice and very limited for any kind of carburator class racing. Modified is an impossibilty with two Holleys and even a real pain with one Holley turned sideways. The windshield also starts to breakup when you fool with the body support area under the windshield. When that motor wears out go to the LT1, you will much more satisfied.
