You know, and this surprises me a bit...why don't some guys get some of the Drag Paks and CJ's and do some match racing? You know, get the cars to where the folks are...in the local areas where they don't have to drive 6 hours and spend $300 on NHRA tickets to see them. On top of that, they wouldn't be the red headed stepchild to the nitro guys.

It would seem to me that there could be some pretty coin, and a lot of exposure in doing this.....or am I just still living in 1965??

We had worked on doing that with a race between Don Garlets and myself with me driving a friends 08 Cobra Jet during the Stock/Super stock race they just had in Orlando. We were lining up some sponsors for it and our intent was best 2 out of 3 with the money going to the winners charity. We weren't able to make it happen because of the health of Don's wife.We hope to be able to make it happen sometime later in the year.

I tried to organize a Saturday night match race with a CJ at Woodburn the week before the divisional and the week between the two Seatlle races

1) the track told me they were not interested - I did not ask them for anything (especially money)
2) there are almost no CJs on the west coast - I tried Sean Cour

I spoke with Jessie from FORD but nothing materialized

So no match racing - good old days after all

Wish you guys luck back there

Ron

Steve, my original intent with the SuperCar Showdown, (beyond its place in the ADRL line-up), was to take the group to several smaller tracks for booked-in "feature" events. Since February, I've already been approached by two tracks to do just that. Once a Chevy presence is available, it should make a great show. You're definitely NOT Living in '65.

Brett, that would make sense. One of the many things lost in today's "big time" drag racing is the intimacy that match races made with the locals. In fact, it is my contention that that intimacy is what drove folks to attend the "national" events.

Back in the day, a Richard Petty or David Pearson would never show up at the local bull ring. But, a Sox & Martin or a Dyno Don would show up at the local drag strips, and would pack the place. The local radio station would get everyone lathered up for the "big" match race. I think everyone made a pretty good living at it, too. It created an intamacy that NASCAR never did have....but made drag racing unique.

I'm not a big fan of today's NHRA big time racing...I don't even watch it on TV much. I can't relate to it...although I've been racing since 1969 and currently run a NSS Hemi car. I really think that the manufacturers would get a lot more bang for the buck with the Drag Paks and CJ's by getting them to display at local dealerships, then match racing them locally. Get 'em to where the folks are....don't pay so much attention to the yuppie spectator crowd that watches nitro, nothing else, and then gets in their Kias and go home.

Anyway, that's my ideas. I really like yours, Brett. I hope it pans out.

Next thing you know they'll start moving the wheels around..stick injectors through the hood...and things will get completely out of control.....

Actually, Richard Petty and David Pearson DID run at smaller dragstrips on a regular basis, (and so did Fred Lorentzen), but your point is valid, Steve.

From the start, the SuperCar Showdwon was designed to work with the manufacturers and the dealerships, (and their respective dealerships associations), to give both a viable platform to sell cars.

To me, one of the greatest moments of the series, (in its short five weeks of actual competition to date), came at the first event (Houston) when the local Baytown Ford dealership actually sold a new 2012 Cobra Jet (4L blower) during the event from their display on the manufacturers midway. Jesse Kershaw was elated!

You say "living in 1965" like that is a bad thing. I'd say that was a groovy thing (did they say groovy in 1965?). Steve would have to live in late 1965 having a 1966 car. Imagine buy a Street Hemi car for $3k or so? Of course, what did you make a month back then, $500 or less?

NHRA is good at waiting for the other sanctioning bodies to prove out a formula and then make it their own. They take the risk, and if the numbers look good NHRA makes a copy of it. Is NHRA owned by the Chinese? LOL!

Remember all the hype about the Imports or Exotics showing up for the SCS...well I'd really like to see how anyone with any of these Turbo Porsches do...
