Stick cars , tubes or no tubes
I just put some new rubber on my Nova and I'm thinking of ditching the tubes. I had 14-32 C07 Hoosiers , now have the 13.5 -31.5 same compound. The car may have liked the additional sidewall stiffness with the tubes and I know I liked the fact that they held air all the time..........however , any opinions?

Quit running tubes in 1980. Like taking 14lbs off your rear spinning or axle weight.

Re: Stick cars , tubes or no tubes
I quite running tubes in the early '70s. Got tired of pinching the tubes and having tires go flat between rounds. The old bias tires would sometimes pinch the tube at the launch. Carroll Caudle and I both had that happen about a week apart. We both ruined tires by the time we got our cars stopped. He was the first (between the two of us) to try it tubeless. His car also picked up ET & MPH tubeless. I changed over and picked up also. Those old Firestones would just about go flat during the week. My MT & Goodyear radials hold air just fine. Seldom loose any at all between races. The Hoosier radials I ran before didn't leak either. As much air as I run in my radials, I don't even run screws.
Had one of those guys that always seem to have a beer in their hand walk by once (had Hoosiers then) and tell me "You had better put screws in your wheels! Your tires are slipping on the wheels!" I didn't walk back to check, but asked him "Is the letter i in Hoosier lined up with the valve stem?" He looked and said "Yes!" I said "Dang! Must slip back to the same place every time!" Not sure he even got it. :-) |
Re: Stick cars , tubes or no tubes
I personally like the tubes on a stick car, like you said Joe stiffer sidewalls, they don't break down as quick. Its personal preference though. I've ran them both and literally have seen no diff in et myself. Your car may be different. I also like the fact of them not leaking down every 10 minutes lol. I guess if ditched the tubes and beadlocks I might have made INDY last year some guys say lol.

No tubes here.... As for not wanting to run screws, many use Permatex HI-TAC on the beads or contact Weld an look into their Knurled Bead option.
