Exhaust temps
 
How many older hot rods got pyrometers in them? what kind of exhaust temp should one be? I am going to put a guage in and do some checkin. is there a ball park number you shoot for?

Gasoline temperatures should be around ~1300F.

Phil,

They still work. Key is not to get too hung on the exact number, but to keep records and see what changes do what. Both your mechanical changes and the air!

Reason is that every probe in a header is a little different than the next car's, different port flow, etc. Lots of variables. As Altronics said, max gas you want is about 1300. I ran a two channel system on one of my cars, but had bungs in all the headers. Could move them around as needed. Testing I would look for hotter or cooler cylinders.

altitude-weather-fuel mixture-header size/design engine tune up can all contribute to varying exhaust temps---KEEP records that will tell you a lot --also dont let it get too hot you'll end up doing damage--- burnt pistons or valves, cracked seats, warped heads , blown head haskets etc
