Things you were bounced for in the olden days
Back when there were rules and they were inforced it was a feat just to pass tech at a NHRA sanctioned event. Lets hear some of the things you had to fix or were even DQED for. I'll start it off with just a few #1- No rubber seal at the rear of the hood ( Farmer ) #2- Trimmed rubber seal at the rear of the hood ( Farmer -- (didn't like that either )-- #3- 1/4 "spacer under front sway bar mounts ( Skip Asay )-- #4-- Alternator belt too loose after run ( DQ ) #5- Slicks were 7 1/4 " wide after run (DQ) #6- 1 degree too much overlap when measured with tape around balancer and a ruler ( Greg X (DQ)-- #7- 2 lbs. too much on the seat 86 instead of 84 lbs. ( Beadle ) (DQ)-- #8- Clutch fan instead of straight fan ( Greg X )

Todd, Can't remember the exact year but it's when we became Jr. S/Stockers. I used to charge $1800.00 for a record capable motor and used 90% of the parts that came it, now I can't do one for less than $10,000 and you can forget about a record. All that extra expense and the payout is about the same. Funny part is when we were a second slower the competition was just as fierce. It's all relative.

My buddy Bobby Dee Myers got busted by Mr.Farmer at Indy one year for having his headlamp bulbs tinted green. He told him " son dont bring that thing back up here till those bulbs look stock"

No speedo cable, Red Anderson, no weather seals on doors (3rd day from the paint shop) Red Anderson. See a pattern here? LOL
I figured "Wow! Guess my junk had better be right." That 's OK, I knew everybody else was too. |
Re: Things you were bounced for in the olden days when there
Was told by Red Anderson to put passenger side sun visor on and arm rests on by the next race. 3 weeks later Wesley teched me in and imformed me that a 150 1955 chevy only came with a driver's side sun visor and no arm rests and I had to take them off.

Re: Things you were bounced for in the olden days when there
First NHRA WCS race we went to.....
1966 Englishtown..... Greg X '57 Chevy sedan delivery Missing chrome trim on the tail fins Missing hood chrome trim parts Bumper trim pieces missing.....can't recall what parts on the hood and bumper.... Too much clearance around the Stahl headers.....you were allowed 2 fingers....no more Went down the road to a junkyard....got what we needed and made some patch pieces for around the headers....and raced. R/UP at Indy....same year. ClassWinner tossed....and so were we for the same reason....replacement cam not accepted by NHRA yet.....A few weeks or a month later we got a letter from NHRA.....Cam was now ok.....Greg X and Marty Barret......in the barn at Indy and the 2 of them got into a mini arguement over what carb was legal and what wasn't. We were already out for the cam and I just wanted to get the H out of there.....It was late and we were the last car in and out.....and it had been a very bad day as a local racer from my home track had been killed in an acident.... Englishtown WCS event a few years later..... Rumors were out that the exhaust system rule was dropped...... We removed the mufflers and tailpipes on the second car we built..... WRONG....Drove down the road to a garage that is still there and fixed the car to meet the rule......on the mans lift..... I went right by there today on the way to E-town.......had to get my current car a fresh chassis sticker.... The worst one to me was at York in 1970 we set the H/S record and would easily have had both ends and the MPH by a ton that day.... Cars were weighed without the driver......and the car was over the minimum but Greg made us drain the fuel out of the tank and see if we had more than 5 gallons.....we did....He did not like that and said go put a spare in it and disallowed our first run.....We again set both ends of the record but were not given a backup.....ran out of time..... The driver of the car weighed 200lbs so what was the point of this..... Well the point was you did what Greg said ...and that was it. We set the record later that year and Greg did the teardown and was very fair and helpfull....... |
Re: Things you were bounced for in the olden days when there
Set the record at New England Dragway wcs in the 198? , fan belt too loose
2lbs too much valvespring pressure at Indy after winning class 4GC carb butterfly screws too short, after setting the record at englishtown Had a similiar situation as rich b, e'town summer nats, probably the first national I raced at, 1974 or 75, tech inspector turned my card over and wrote the infractions to be fixed 1. wrong emblem on the glovebox 2. door bumper trim needed both sides of car(66nova) 3. small holes in the bottom of the doors(they were ss trim holes and I was claiming a regular nova) need to be filled in 4. looked under the dash with the hood open and he could see light, fill holes in firewall I too went to the junkyard and got trim etc and fixed all of it. |
