old, but plenty of tread left slicks... ???
Well, I have sat on the sidelines for 10+ years... I have a set of 32.5 x 13.5 L C07 compound hoosiers that have been on the car the whole time.... The car and the tires have been in the trailer, so they have been outside in the both freezing and hot weather for 10+ years.. The shame of it is that the tires have 85%+ of meat left... But they are obviously dry.... Should I attempt to 'revive' them with some various tire "snake oil", or is it futile ??? Thought maybe I would set up a 'rotisserie' setup with a small gearmotor rotating them and the tire dipping into a pan of vht/or other snake oil juice for several days.. Then clean em off, and when I go to the track for the first time, do a real long burnout to clean off that top layer of rubber, and run it and see what I have.... Or am I just kidding myself... Just put the tires on the burn pile and shell out $600 for new ones? It just kills me that there is so much rubber left there..... The car normally hooks hard in the worst of conditions, so its not like its a finicky car....

I have pair probably older than yours that work great everytime I need them, I also have another that wouldn't work with a 4 cylinder in front of them. As long as they aren't weather checked or dry rotted I guess you wont know unless you try.

If you value your car and your life, I would not run them! I have seen slicks come apart on the big end and the results ain't purty! They might LOOK fine until that big smoky burnout and then the tire separates. 10 years is a looooong time. I would put new rubber all the way around and not try and play the odds! Just sayin'. Jim

Yes Jim I am, Aren't you getting tired of beating that dead horse yet? The helmet is good enough for the NHRA tech guy's and believe me they have all wanted to see it thanks to this forum.

Well if i was doin tech after what has been said, I think i would check everything that would be considered safety equip. Your history doesn't do you well, being CHEAP only go's so far, so go ahead and wear that watermellon of a helmet. But you don't need to tell others to follow you to the bridge.....

Guys, I dont have a cheap helmet. That comment was directed to another poster.
Please re-read the posts. Thanks for all the input, and a great PM someone sent me with information about freeze cycles on racing compound rubber and the associated danger. These slicks have a date with my burn pile and I'll be buying new ones. Keivn |
