tire section width?

if you had one tire, with 10" tread and mounted it on a 10" rim, and then mounted the same tire on an 8" rim...would the section width be wider on the 8" rim than on the 10" rim?

thanks Rod in AZ

It would appear to buldge, but I don't see how it would be wider.

I don't think you will see any gain doing that. My stuff has always been faster on wider wheels. Let us know what yours likes.

Re: tire section width?

when a tire manufacturer gives a "section" width dimension on a tire that is the measurement of the tire through the sidewalls on a "spec" size wheel...so the wheel width as it gets wider than that will actually make the section width dimension larger and the opposite on a narrower wheel....

Re: tire section width?

For my tiny tires (14 x 8 x 20) I have found (through multiple back to back to back tests) That a six inch wide wheel crosses the finish line 200 rpm's higher than an 8 inch wide wheel. It seems like the 8 inch wide wheel allows the tire to grow more.

Overall width of the tire would be more with a wider wheel.

So, to answer the question, I would say the section width would de-crease with the 8 inch wheels.
