Anybody know about a drag strip in Lake Havasu Arizona?
City Council voted unanimously June 27, 2012 approving the zoning for a motorsport park with an NHRA sanctioned drag strip. Here's what I found online:
"The city council VOTED A UNANIMOUS YES To the rezoning and adding a new use that allows a "Motorsports facility" in an M1P and M2 Industrial Zone area. This gives the go ahead to move forward with a state of the art racing complex on the approximate 100 acre site just south of the airport, bordered on the west by the new AGAVE BUSINESS PARK. Thanks for all your prayers and good wishes for those who were unable to attend, but for the HUNDREDS that did make it and those that spoke on behalf of PROGRESS for the city, we ALL OWE YOU. What an amazing turnout of supporters versus the 3 people who spoke in opposition! Now the work begins...The P.E.D.(Partnership for Economic Development) will be busy helping us get all of the necessary paperwork together and polishing up our business model so everyone will have an idea on what the finished site and the actual operation will look like. We still have a ways to go...But as the saying goes... You take one step at a time and keep YOUR EYES FIRMLY FOCUSED ON FINISHING WHAT YOU START! I can ALREADY SMELL THE SWEET AROMA OF NITRO AND RUBBER. Thanks AGAIN ..SOOOOO MUCH Lake Havasu Drag Racing Association This is obviously a gear head town! Check this out for all the car, boat and jet-ski action this city supports. Place looks like a fun city! http://www.markhahnhavasu300.com |

From my home in North Phoenix or Anthem, Google maps shows 134 miles / 3 hrs 53 minutes. Not much more than Tucson Raceway. Edit: I just called London Bridge Raceway Park. It will be 1/4 mile track with emphasis on sportsman racing but room to grow to full pro field. Track elevation is 672'. Temps are comparable to Phoenix, maybe 10 degrees cooler in the non-summer months. They are looking at not only the Phoenix market but California. Pomona Drag Strip is 273 miles, 4hrs 23 minutes to London Bridge. Funding is in place but as most of you know, it's still aways to go as it currently is raw land only. |
Re: Anybody know about a drag strip in Lake Havasu Arizona?
Bill Doner (last I heard) was hired on as promoter and operator. It will be a new lease on life not just for him, but for the southwestern drag racing community. Bill was the guy behind all those 32 and 64 funny car events at OCIR, Irwindale, Fremont (Baylands), and SIR back in the 70s. Although several local sportsman racers could never see eye to eye with him back then, we live in a new era today, and he could very well be the antidote to our sport's current state of affairs here in the west. I know first hand NHRA needs Bill much more than he needs them, and understands how to sell value across the board....to the racer and fans alike. Hopefully the racing community will give him a chance, and here's to hoping Mr. Doner will put the magic back into our sport once more, with or without NHRA. :D

It sounds like it'll be a good one. Lake Havasu is full of old drag racers.
