racing fuel with oxygen sensors
 

Was at the tuner's Monday getting a tune and dyno and he suggested adding 116 racing fuel in the tank. Said about 5 gallons in a 16 gallon tank. I still run both the front and rear oxygen sensors. Won't this hurt them? We don't drive on the street anymore; only race. His thinking was that it helps with possible detonation on launch ... which I've never heard of either. Worth it or a waste of money? It's a stock LS1 and we run 93 gas typically.

I don't think you will hurt anything running a little race gas at times. I ran a lot of race gas through the ten oxygen sensors used on my dyno and rarely had an issue. For some reason Ethanol killed quite a few however.

Scott, if your only racing it you can have your "tuner" simply put it in open loop so the O2 sensors won't be used. If you are logging data with a wide band, I would change that sensor each season due to the lead. Lead skews their calibration, but not right away. In closed loop the GM PCMs would see the degraded factory sensors as a lean condition and eventually add fuel at WOT also to try to protect the engine. If it's an automatic car I see no real reason to run leaded fuel anyway.

There used to be some good unleaded race fuels from Sonoco available that would be a great choice if you have them in your area. WWTTRD (what 1320Racer do).
